New Suunto ZoneSense feature, the next big thing in real-time HRV analysis

Posting for those who haven’t come across this yet, it’s being mentioned as probably the biggest innovation in endurance sports this year.

Exciting news to all Suunto users, Suunto recently launched ZoneSense, which measures workout intensity by analysing heart rate variability (HRV) in real-time.

DDFA (Dynamical Detrended Fluctuation Analysis) is a new method to analyze the changes in your HRV data during exercise. It is an evolution of the DFA analysis.

What is DDFA?

DDFA has been recently introduced by Suunto for real-time measurement of aerobic and anaerobic thresholds in Suunto devices via their new feature.

This is not a metric created by Suunto, rather they’re the first ones to bring this to a sports watch, powered by MoniCardi’s cutting-edge technology.

It can also measure aerobic and anaerobic thresholds during first 45 mins of the workout and a R-R heart rate belt with BT is mandatory. Works for multiple sports.

Compatibility wise, old Suunto watches got this feature automatically at launch in Suunto app for post workout analysis, on the contrary newer Suunto watches get real-time Suunto + app (S9PP, SV, SR and SRS).

Already experimenting with this new cool feature! I was wondering what data fields could be synced to intervals? I see nothing additional in my fit files

AFAIK nothing new in FIT file either, all the magic happens in Suunto app after the workout gets synced.

Hi, I read that the DDFA metric is not copyrighted, so I was wondering if it is possible to add it to Intervals so I can find LT1/LT2.

AFAIK DDFA metric is a Suunto exclusive at the moment. The whole algorithm lives in the Suunto app, not anywhere else.

Suunto fit files do not have anything about it, other than the HRV data that DDFA algorithm processes.

So having this in ICU is not a possibility right now.

@herlas What is your relationship with Suunto. I ask because this sounds a lot like a press release. Yet, you don’t represent yourself as someone from the company which would be standard protocol. If this is a personal recommendation, same question.

Not sure if I really need to answer this  but here you go, I’m a regular Suunto end user here, and yes I’ve shared public links and materials made available when the feature was released, intention being to share this with ICU community for awareness.

Cool. Very profession write up. I could help but wonder if that was your personal opinion or not. Kinda makes a difference.

@herlas do you know if HRV data is synced from Suunto to interval.icu on a daily basis?

I don’t think that’s in place atm, there’s a separate thread on that, chime in there and ask
