Playing with workout creator I see that 2 hours at 56% of FTP results in the same strain score as 1 hour at 100% of FTP.
This can’t be right either as training stimulus nor training stress measure. The former is a leisurely easy ride comparable to walking your dog in a park while the other is a very hard training session (even if split into intervals). Is there a bug somewhere? If not how comes Intervals.icu now defaults to this metric?
Because duration is always also considered in training load calculations. You can not disrispect that fact.
It’s basically similar to TSS, and that’s: Duration x Intensity

Training stress/stimulus is not linear though. Riding at 100% of FTP is more than twice straining/stimulating as riding at 50% of FTP. You got to respect that part of the equation as well.
At the end of the day we have a metric that shows nonsense though. Why use it as default? Even TSS was better than this.
Who is using this as default? I still use TSS.
And you can built your own Load Calculation, if you think you have better approaches. There also must be an thread talking about alternatives to the default “Load calculation”.
It popped out as default for me when I opened a workout creator. I wasn’t doing it for a while so I was surprised to see it.

Yup, I have created one of them and I am using my custom metric. Unfortunately I can’t use my custom metric in the workout creator (last time I checked). I opened a workout creator and SS popped out as default metric so I was curious how it works and noticed it produces nonsense.
Have you read the support forum post with links to external documents?
That’s why I am asking if there is a bug in it. It says that it considers time spent above FTP and takes into account contribution from various systems so it shouldn’t produce results like 2 hours of riding at recovery pace being equal to 1 hour of riding at FTP.
I don’t know it well enough to give able to explain the system. It does rely on three maximal efforts, considered short (5-15 secs), medium (3-5 mins) and long (10-12 mins). It’s a model-based estimation, so ensuring your efforts are maximal efforts ensures the model is “more” accurate.
