Garmin vs strava sync

this is the way…

Hi everyone!

I just created a new account and started syncing with both Garmin and Strava.

Since I wanted to have the full history, I also uploaded both dumps from Garmin and Strava and got covered from my very first activity.

My problem now is that I can’t find some of my activities by the name I’ve set on Strava but not on Garmin.

How can I handle this situation?

I read in some past replies that there should be a way of taking the Strava name and Garmin data, but how?

Thanks a lot!

P.S.: Is there any way of forcefully discarding “deleted” activities once and for all?

From my experience above with Wahoo - You should not discard anything.
As @app4g and @Nik_Om_Cinderella_Ri shared Intervals actually prioritizes non Strava workouts. But you can still have the title as it will “blend” the two.

See my screenshot below:

Ride title via Strava and on the right Wahoo and Strava.
But if you look at it on the activities page:
Its one single entry:

Though as I am about to hit the reply button:
If you want to search Intervals by strava title - I havent done that before.
I tend to look back on the activities page and the fitness page rather than remembering a semi-clever ride title.

In my case, it’s only marked as Garmin.

What could be the reason? Does it make sense to upload just this Strava activity manually to see what happens?

To help we would need to see your “settings” page.
Should see something like this:
Note - I have both Wahoo and Strava download ticked.

Sure, here’s my setting page!

Reminder: that activity is from 2 years ago, and it was added through bulk import together with hundreds of other activities.

Ah - if its bulk that is outside my experience.
But my next question would be if you are a paid intervals member?

Wonder if this is a historical data thing that only syncs back 90 days etc.

Also what about more recent activities? Do you see both flags on current workouts?

  • Yes, I’m a paid user
  • I’ve just seen that a recent activity (Jan 11th) is marked with both sources, but an earlier one (Dec 15th) is only from Garmin. The same applies to all previous activities. So, it seems to me that the “merge” of activities only works when Intervals directly connects to the Garmin and Strava APIs, but not when dealing with bulk imports (which is the case for older activities).
  • I tried to delete the activity and manually upload the Strava fit file, but what appeared then on the list was the previous Garmin version

Strava here means items from their API.
If it’s manual upload. You should see ~ Upload

The ~Strava link is just to send you to the Strava activitiy webpage. Other items are merged / prioritized with non Strava data. (So not violating Strava t&c)

It makes sense, in fact, all the Strava activities older than a few weeks are marked as “Upload” (since they were imported through the dump import). The curious thing is that that doesn’t happen for Garmin, meaning that the activities imported from the dump are correctly marked as “Garmin Connect”.

I double-checked the information instructions related to the import of old data for Garmin and Strava and noticed that Garmin limits the API import to one year, but that doesn’t apply to Strava. For this reason, I launched the old data import for Strava and it was able to process all the activities from the very beginning of my history.

As a consequence of this:

  • Activities that were marked only as “Upload” now also have the “Strava” label/link
  • Garmin activities with a duplicate on Strava, now have both labels, and the title has been updated with the Strava one (exactly what I wanted to achieve).

So, thank you very much, everyone, for all the hints, you helped me understand how this platform works!

Manual upload for Garmin probably doesn’t have as much impact as Strava (T&C wise)

What you get from Garmin Connect over the API is the original FIT file and that is ‘your’ data.
What you get from the Strava API, is a modified FIT and Strava considers that ‘their’ data. If you request your full archive, you are getting the original files and thus also ‘your’ data.

I am intending to drop Strava from my training ecosystem and source of data for intervals.

Current Setup:
Polar flow (Exercise) → Strava → Intervals
Trainerroad → Strava → intervals
Rouvy → Strava → Intervals
Polar Flow (wellness data) → intervals

New setup:
Polar → intervals
Rouvy → intervals
Trainerroad (unsubscribe)

My main question is if I disconnect Strava and add exercises to the polar import, will I lose my currently imported Strava exercises? and will I need to re-import them from Polar & Rouvy

you can find your answers above.
Doesn’t matter where is the org source.
Just remove “download activities” from strava

You will see this. Strava will auto deleted.

I could do that as a step one, but what happens the day I close my strava account completely. I am no longer using it so have little need to keep it around

Would I then need to resync old sessions?

Once again, if you disconnect Strava, you loose all history from activities that came in through their API!
First request your full history and import that. After import you can disconnect because your original activity files are ´Uploads´.
This has been repeated numerous times now…

Then this would happen and you will cry a little (or a lot)
