Turbo Issues Elite Direto XR

Hi all,

Thought I’d tap into you guys here as I’m pulling my hair out.

Got an Elite Direto XR, had it about a year but its really playing up at the minute.

Erg mode is simply going crazy. The torque it’s asking for is ridiculous. I’ll be doing a warm up on Erg aiming for say 200w but in reality grinding out 450w at 50 cadence and it just won’t ease up.

Occasionally when I first start a ride it’s like the resistance is on max and I can barely turn the cranks.

I’ve tried taking the bike off, recalibrating (both using zwift and upgrado after at least 10 min riding) but to no avail.

Calibration says 6430 if that means anything to anyone.

Any suggestions? Obviously will open a support ticket with Elite but wasn’t sure if anyone has had similar. Going to Majorca next month so really need to get my training in to

I do not own a Direto XR, but a Suito.
Had very comparable issues after connecting my Wahoo Bolt to it.
Apparently it messes with the ‘wheel circumference’ setting.

Connect to your trainer through the Elite app and check the value.

Interesting, thanks for the link.
Mine is set as 2070. Need to read what it should be.
Shame there isn’t a factory reset button

Should be around 173. What app are you using?

The Elite one is where the settings are but I only ride in Zwift.

Think the circumference only affects speed not power so be surprised if this works but I really hope so

The calibration is a spin-off time. Individual to trainers…
Factory values should be written under the base of the trainer…

Checked under there, 6432 so 2 higher.

I’ve logged various calibrations over the last year and they’ve all been 6430 so not sure why it’s happening now.

The power readings seems pretty good it’s just erg mode is extraordinarily high.

This sounds like possible ERG “Spiral of death” situation? since you’re saying at 50rpm. It like the trainer thinks you’re not putting in enough power, so it UP the resistance in an effort to get you to increase power, but in reality, you’re just spiraling cos the resistance is so high, you just end up not being able to pedal.

I’m not sure if this is the issue, but that’s something which I didn’t like in my own trainer, which is why I did this on my trainer App

But I’ve also found 2 thread on elite forums - Hope it helps.

BTW: changing the wheel diameter should not impact the resistance, AFAIK. It should only change the speed estimation. I remember that I had to change that parameter in Xert, otherwise I was easily cycling at 220km/h !

On the ERG side, here is a trick I used when I was playing with BigRingVR: spin before you give control of the HT to the app, else you may have a very high resistance at the start of your ride.

I thought spiral of death was more when you drop below the target power and can’t fight it to get it back. Mine is just always high and then wears you out.

Second link is interesting as it seems someone has the exact same issue

I see. then it’s not likely that. Hope the links can get your sorted out.

My direto XR does this but to a much lesser degree. If I don’t pedal before I connect to TrainerRoad resistance goes 20-50% above target for first 30 seconds. Annoying.

Also, I’ve almost given up using the turbo in the inner ring. Any large jump in power eg 150 > 275 results in a 10% wattage bonus that I can usually really do without for 30 seconds to a minute. Solution has been to do these kind of intervals in the big ring.

I set the smoothing parameter to 2 in the myETraining app, that seems to give the trainer a faster reaction.

Then I set my training apps (TrainerDay and currently Xert) to the “Slope” mode, so the resistance remains stable. I adjust it according to the next intervals coming: between 0 and 0.5% on recovery intervals, up to 2.5% for short HIIT, and up to 5% if I have to work on specific points, as for ex. on intervals at a low cadence on the big ring :stuck_out_tongue:

hi all,

i have direto xr and garmin 530 head unit, when i start training and the intervals come, if target power is 250w my resistance is 300w at 95rpm, i must manuelly enter the garmin target power to lower like 210w to match with 250w anyone has same proplem?

Do you also have a power meter or only power from the trainer?
If you have, Garmin will always display power from a real power meter. There is almost always a difference between trainer power and power measured from a real meter

I have got only power meter from trainer

I did a full restart and update, plus took the front panel off and vaselined the axle that the magnet moves up and down on. Will try and find the email from Elite when home

is it work?

Doing this helped:

  • clean the stepping motor (yellow shaft) with a rag
  • grease again the stepping motor with vaseline grease

follow the first minute to see how to access

I also did a complete refresh, reinstall all apps and start again
