Travel to low altitude before a high altitude event

I live in Denver (5,600ft) and am doing the Pikes Peak bike fondo on Aug 10th. It starts at just over 10,000ft and goes to just over 14,000ft.

I did this last year and know what to expect.

This year I contemplated taking the family back home to Iowa (1,200ft) July 21 through Aug 3 because it works well for the kids’ summers.

Is this a dumb idea? Will I deacclimate during that time? I would take the trainer along to stick to the plan, but my targets will definitely be different there. Just don’t want to mess up all my prep by spending two weeks at low altitude so close to the event.

Standard answer here, but here goes. I remember my summers visiting my mother’s family fondly as some of the best times in my life. You will never get those days back, raising your children. Cherish them while you can. This may seem like just a handful of days to you, but you are on a different clock than they are. They are newly experiencing life every day as they grow with new understandings.
