Transitioning from Training Peaks

Hi group, I am looking at the possibility of moving my athletes across to Intervals from TP. I was using Todays Plan until it was closed and I miss the modern functions it had. Intervals seems to be at the same if not slightly better. I have not looked into it very closely as yet however I am interested to hear how other users and in particular coaches are finding the platform. What are the possible future costs involved in using Intervals for coaching? Thanks - Stef (Watts Up Coaching) Australia

There’s no difference in cost to become a supporter, whether you are a standard user or a coach.
Actually, what you get here for free is already amazing. Only some more advanced features require subscription.
You can start for free and when you see a feature with a purple star, it means that it is a ā€˜Supporter only’ option.
As a coach, it should be a no-brainer.
The amount of features is impressive and still growing at fast speed.

Hi Stef

I moved to Intervals from TP. You might find this thread useful for transferring your workouts and plans.

Some of the features are supportive for coaching.

Intervals.ICU is a, or the, G.O.A.T. :goat: !

Over the time I extended and fully integrated #mytrainingplanning* with ICU, the result is amazing:

There is too much bad and overrated software in the market which does NOT succeed scenarios I was basically looking for as an athlete & a coach, to plan individual training based on individual recent training load and its upcoming individual needs.

*last update of this page is already some days ago. I am out of Strava and fully with ICU since many month already.

I’d love for my athletes to receive a reminder to rate their uploaded rides (RPE and Feel) or to leave comments on their activities. Perhaps one thing TrainingPeaks offers that I miss the most here is push notifications (but an app would be needed, I believe).

Among coaches, I know there are various methods for prescribing the training (or ā€œsending the training plansā€). Some rely 100% on the platform (the prescribed sessions are found exclusively there). In my case, I’m very old-fashioned and I send out a weekly document (in a kind of calendar format) that describes every training sessions with notes, and only the structured workouts are added to the Intervals calendar, in order to sync with Garmin, Zwift, etc (using the excellent workout builder).

I’m telling this because it might be an area we could exchange more ideas and experiences about. I’d really like to centralize all communication - including how the planned training is actually ā€œcommunicatedā€ - within Intervals, but I’m not yet convinced by the current format (and to be honest, I haven’t explored it much yet). Still, this is definitely an aspect where people coming from TrainingPeaks (or Today’s Plan) might feel something is missing.

I work with a few dozens athletes, but I don’t use workouts library or copy-and-paste weeks between athletes. Yes, I painstakingly write or edit every almost single training session, ever. But I think I need to play with the library to find out how it can help my workflow and what’s missing there that could be improved.

I began the transition to Intervals during Strava’s major crisis at the end of last year. I came from a lesser-known platform (Cycling Analytics). The TP workflow never worked for me - the analysis capabilities on the TP web app are basically nonexistent (or very summary-based), and the reliance on installed software to thoroughly analyze a workout is unthinkable.

At Intervals, I’ve found many new features and solutions that are truly excellent. The ones I miss, I suggest on the forum. David and the whole community must really be proud of what’s been built here.

I’ve been in two large (~500) Winter group coaching sessions and as a self-coached athlete. Also I had a 1-1 coach from 2020-2023. Personally I’ve deep-dived into analytics, but also know what to pay attention to and when.

From the Group coaching, my belief is that most athletes have very basic needs:

  • find and review a workout
  • workout syncs to a virtual training platform or their bike computer
  • simple feedback on compliance to individual workouts and plan

Intervals has that, and it looks different than TrainingPeaks. One immediate advantage is that it works the same on mobile and computer. Intervals is generally better in my opinion, however I find TP’s simple red/yellow/green tile shading of completed workouts to be visually easier (which I believe appeals to athletes with little interest in analytics).

Intervals is a really good platform. There is a lot of flexibility in Intervals which is good for intermediate to advanced users. For athletes wanting advanced analytics, with some customization I now have graphs comparable to WKO5. For basic athletes with simply analytics needs, I believe you can ā€œhand themā€ customized charts (saved as public custom charts?).

I recently let my paid subscription to TP lapse and don’t plan to renew. Prior to that I used Tp2Intervals (mentioned above) to move my TP workout library to Intervals.

Still using free TP to send completed workouts to WKO5, and for its very good archiving capabilities.
