Strava sues Garmin

I have transfered my segments to the IGPSPORT app and it is working fine. Just as another alternative?

Someone shld let Strava knows that IGPSPORTS also does this so they can add them into their lawsuit. :face_with_peeking_eye::face_with_peeking_eye:

The advantage of Garmin Segments I’ve found is you can use them for Live Segments on downhill segments, which Strava banded years ago.

Ok. Stupid question…. Segments is patented IP?

How’s that even possible…. Segments are a core routing concept. It’s been around for decades.

DCRainmaker covered this aspect (emphasis mine):

Nonetheless, Strava says that in 2014, Garmin copied Strava Segments and put it into their platform. I don’t think there’s any disagreement there, to be honest. Nor can I think of examples of a Segment-like functionality that existed prior to Strava. Of course, the concept of racing up a mountain along a given route for a time split, definitely existed prior to Strava (example, the KOM jersey in the Tour de France). But patents aren’t all about ideas, they are about technical implementation. In this case that includes things like gates to enter the segment, how those GPS points are treated, etc…

So it’s not just about a theoretical route being broken into segments, it covers matching when a rider with noisy GPS info, with perhaps an imperfect line that doesn’t match the centre-line of the road with a defined segment and also making decisions about the exact timing of the entry and exit of that segment.

(Haven’t read the patent myself, just paraphrasing)

Sure. I’m familiar with software patents.

It would be a very, very difficult case to prove Garmin literally stole the implementation.

Patenting the concept of tracking time for a length of track would seem ludicrous though. Been around since racing began.

With RideWithGPS, you can create segments on roads you didn’t ride yet.
I just tried. I created a short route, saved it, then you can select any portion of it and save it as a segment.
It’s sad that RWGPS never turned into a ā€œsocialā€ app like Strava, that’s the only thing I would miss; everything else, they do it better (route planner, turn-by-turn navigation, segments, …).

I expect Strava will comply with the new Garmin developer guidelines on 1 Nov

I can see Garmin going ahead and blocking Strava’s access to the API if the new guidelines are not implemented by Strava.

But I can’t see Strava pushing Garmin to the brink and risking Garmin blocking Strava’s access to the API.

Can anyone see Strava not implementing the new guidelines on 1 Nov?

Strava just sent a mail to API users (e.g. Intervals.icu) explaining that they need to follow the Garmin attribution guidelines. I need to add an ā€œAPI agreementā€ doc to Intervals.icu with similar terms.

We will find out on 1 November if, when Salazar made his reddit post stating:

ā€œUnfortunately we could not justify to our users complying with the new guidelines.ā€

that was hogwash, or if Garmin has agreed to Strava’s representations that the attribution be effected in a less intrusive way.

I saw that email this morning too

My question is simple to understand.
Possibly more than 60% of athletes use Garmin equipment, now with this issue of Garmin being the target of attack by Strava, A simple and effective solution to put an end to Stava in a few weeks, its added value are the segments,
Well, if I and everyone who created the chias segments they enjoy enormous profits, and according to your information, when they are deleted by those who created them, they disappear. So Strava disappears in the blink of an eye, anyone who feels affected just has to delete everything they created,
and therefore, Strava and its subscription, among other things, no longer make sense. I’m going to do tests, and if I confirm your information that when I delete everything that was created by me, it disappears, then Strava in my region will be almost at zero

[/quote]Not sure if you actually read the linked document and screenshots posted. ALL PUBLIC segments remain on Strava, even if you delete your account.

So you have to delete your segments before deleting your account.

Strava has voluntarily dismissed the case

I hope Garmin whacks Strava hard now.

Why? Who would benefit from that?

Everyone who interacts with Strava: a firm whack from Garmin may be what it takes to stop Strava doing any more crazy things for a while.

It could be that the way Garmin reacted that caused Strava to voluntarily dismiss the case is enough, but a taste of its own medicine might fix it more solidly in the mind of Strava’s exec team.
