Splits (1km) Doesn't Stick

There are existing intervals, so I do Action → Clear Intervals. But after doing this, I can’t select the interval to “split”.

That’s normal. If no interval exists, you can’t split it It’s just a view on the entire activity without any intervals. Easiest way to make the whole activity one big interval is to create one interval, no matter where or how long, open the dialog and click on the left/right arrow icon to make the interval cover the complete activity.

You can do the same if you have multiple autodetect intervals, just open the dialog for one of them and click the same icon.

it will only split the 1km lap I clicked on into 2x 500m laps. The other intervals maintain.

Also normal, you are editing only that one selected interval. make 1 big interval as per the instructions above.

I hover on all individual laps, and press D. then I end up with 1 BIG lap

In this case, you removed all intervals, so there’s nothing to split
