Ride Cave: Free, browser-based virtual workouts, racing, and 3D velodromes (Intervals.icu integrated)

Support for the old Humon Hex smo2 sensor in ble mode would be awesome.

Hi Ben, is it possible to use Ride Cave on an iPhone? With a BLE browser?
Thanks!:folded_hands:

@Marco_Saraceno you discovered the achilles heel of Ride Cave and web bluetooth. Apple blocks web bluetooth in Chrome in iOS so the app does not work in web browsers in those devices. We will likely eventually build a mobile app or bridge app but we’re aways away.

I noticed,… I’ve tried a BLE web browser, and even if it connects to my polar HR belt and the kickr as a power meter, I’m not able to connect the kickr as a trainer… :sad_but_relieved_face:

You can try “BLE Link” Browser - at least it opens the Bluetooth search window for connecting the trainer (that didn’t happen on Bluefy). But didn’t test it myself to connect yet.

Marco can you tell me more about what you are trying to do? Why are you connecting the trainer as a power meter and not a trainer?

Also, what device and browser is that?

Hi Ben!
This is my review as a long-time Auuki user.

Pros:

  • UI is more modern and better fit for my use case (desktop PC)
  • more ride modes to pick from to keep things interesting
  • setup and workout works just fine, no dropped connections, no major problems

Cons (or rather improvement ideas, ordered by importance):

  1. You need to add beep sounds when interval starts/ends (customizable volume). Seems like an obvious thing, but I couldn’t find it anywhere in the settings (maybe I’m blind).
  2. When exporting FIT file, export it signed as if it comes from Garmin device (e.g. Garmin Edge 1040). That way I can import it straight to Garmin Connect and get all the extra, Garmin-limited metrics e.g. Training Effect on my Garmin watch.
  3. Even though I have my account linked to Intervals and you show my FTP set in Intervals, it’s not automatically synced to Ride Cave. Would be great if you imported FTP and body weight from Intervals.
  4. Something completely out of the box: I have a smart home setup (Home Assistant). With Zwift I had a fancy automation that would change color of the ambient lights in my pain cave to match my current power zone. Keeping everything cloud-free you could think about an option to post live metrics to a chosen (local) MQTT server. Once it was there, it would open doors for any custom integrations.

Overall great work! I can easily see myself switching to Ride Cave for good once 1. and 2. are solved.

Thanks Wojciech! I appreciate the feedback. 1, 2, and 3 will be out in the next release.

Live now:

  • Added audio cues to workouts and track rides/races (turn it off in Settings > Preferences > Sound)
  • FTP and body weight get synced from Intervals.icu (reconnect is required)
  • Signed .fit exports as Garmin to enable Training Effect. I tested it and all looks to be working but let me know if not.

Also: UX improvements to power match. If it is not working for you, please run this test and send me the file Virtual track rides, races, and free workouts | Ride Cave

There’s something weird with uploading activity to Strava. This is what I got for today’s ride:

With so many apps connected (Ride Cave, Intervals, Strava, Garmin Connect) it’s possible I have a duplicated syncing somewhere, but I don’t get these duplicates with Auuki so it’s worth checking if it’s possible it originated from Ride Cave itself. I can say Strava upload was in progress FAR longer than Intervals, maybe there was some random error/timeout and auto-retry generated the duplicate?

Looks very complete, I am impressed!

I built something similar, not as fancy as yours but here are what mine does
It recommends rides from mywhoosh. I find that easier, I am given a recommendation every day of 5 rides. Based on how I feel I can pick one or the other. I do use HRV, sleep score etc. but there still may be additional limitations.
I have trained the model on the last few years of my personal riding.
Further I get a forecast of how the model thinks I will be training, every day. I am not sure that it is that useful, but it’s kind of interesting to see.

One thing that does look odd for me is the zone progression.

I tested the new interface, and it’s really nice! I hope they’ll add customization options over time, like moving blocks left and right and up and down.

After completing a workout, uploading to Strava isn’t working correctly. The workout is simply detected as a ride. On other platforms, a trainer workout is detected as a virtual ride. This needs to be fixed. Thanks!

So I did set up a race A, calling it Lanzarote, 100 km bike ride in 3:30 to see what the plan would be

I now get this
Significantly behind target - consider adjusting goal or increasing volume

triathlon
9 to 14 hours
Extreme aerobic endurance
Resistance to high winds and heat
Substantial climbing capacity (2500m+ elevation gain)
Nutritional management over long duration
The event ‘Lanzarote’ is synonymous with Ironman Lanzarote, one of the most demanding full-distance triathlons in the world. While the athlete’s current CTL is 54.5, their historical ramp rate of 8.7 is very high, allowing for significant growth. A target CTL of 95 is within the recommended range for a Full Ironman (85-110) and is realistically achievable within 8 weeks given the athlete’s
demonstrated ability to handle high training loads, while still allowing for a necessary taper period before the race.
I realise that it should not be a A Race, and now changed it to B Race and renamed it to friendly bike ride and now I get a lot more reasonable suggestions

I dont know how the tool came up with Triathlon though. Never done one. I’m 58 and dont see me doing one.

Maybe that is one thing that the model should also take into account. Age, as that does increase recovery need.

Hi Ben-
I was trying to connect my iPhone running Ride Cave in Bluefy web browser to my Kickr ride setup. Bluefy is a BLE browser that allows to use certain webapp that use bluetooth to connect to a variety of devices.
I connected the PM just to try and it works. Unfortunately when I click the trainer icon, it did not show up the bluetooth selection option, while with both HR an PM I was able to select a device to connect.
I will follow up on R2T trying a different BLE web browser tomorrow when I get back home, and I will let you know.

Thank you for trying this Marco! Let me know what you discover and I can try it out soon too. BLE devices range in complexity while iOS Web BLE (especially through a bridge app like Bluefy, is likely still a nascent technology. I would not be surprised if its able to connect to a power meter as those are very basic bluetooth connections while trainer protocols and GATT handshakes etc are more nuanced and complex.

Hi! Ben, why don’t you announce such big updates here?

Hi Sergei, I’m hesitant to use David’s wonderful platform for continuing my own self promotion and would prefer to see the app grow through organic reputation.

That being said, if such things would be helpful, I’d be happy to keep this community updated on progress.

I tried Ride Cave today and had a great first impression. I’d love to contribute feedback over my next sessions, but despite being close to my third decade of internet use, I still feel like a digital illiterate when it comes to Discord.

I briefly did a workout using a laptop with Ubuntu and Chrome, with the bike’s power meter as the power source together with a smart trainer. As already mentioned above, cadence was not displayed. The little text bubble showing power match information is very clever!

Overall, I found the interface excellent and very intuitive.

After that, I tried an elimination race. I personally love this kind of challenge and would be happy to send a DM with a few ideas. Unfortunately, when attempting the challenge that requires holding power within a 40 W window, everything broke right at the moment when the “for real” segment started.

Congrats on the work, and thanks for making this platform available!

Thank you Gabriel! For the kind words and the bug reports. Please keep the feedback coming.

I will look into that cadence issue more. I pushed a fix for the broken challenge. Thanks again
