Preparing for the second peak in the season

I have planned 3 fitness peaks this cycling season. I am training for MTB XCM/XCO disciplines. Now the first peak is basically here and I am starting to plan the macro cycles for the next period.

Currently I have a choice between:

  1. 1 week transition, 4 weeks base 2, 4 weeks build 2 + race week
  2. 3 weeks base 2, 3 weeks build 1, 3 weeks build 2 + race week

In the transition week I would focus on weight training. The first choice would have me reducing load for only 2 times after each cycle (not counting the race week taper), while the second one would mean reducing load 3 times.

What would be the drawbacks and advantages for each approach?

What are your thoughts?
