Hi,
I recently got an Oura Ring V3 and like it so far.
What I was planning on doing however was: Use it for manual HRV Readings in the morning.
This should work like this:
- start an unguided session (their wording) with 3+ min
- get HRV
3min is supposed to show avg HRV (rMSSD) while 5min and longer show both avg HRV as well as a graphical trend (don’t really need that)
Now to my problem:
When I wake up, I sit up on the side of my bed, cross my arms and rest them on my knees. So a rather stable and comfortable position to hold for 3-5min.
I initially tried the 3min session and failed (HR was there HRV not). Next day I went straight for the 5min and HRV showed up. Now I’m back to no HRV showing up with either duration. When I randomly try the sessions at the office (siting at my desk, arms resting on the table) both 3min and 5min produce HRV, so that still works.
The support isn’t much help here as they kinda stopped responding to my mails
Any ideas on what I can improve/change on my my morning reading?
Currently I’m still also measure with my Polar H10 and Elite HRV. I want to go to Oura exclusively for that (and calculate SDDN from the R-R values I’d get from the Oura API) but in order to do that I kinda need at least a week of dual measurements in order to see if my calculations make any sense. So far I just wasn’t able to generate enough data with my Ring.
I Hope my rambling makes sense and am looking forward for tips and thoughts.
I’ve been using an Oura ring, V3 for over a year. Prior to that, I used three different apps (Elite HRV, HRV4TRaining, and one more I forgot) to take morning readings with Polar H10. Oura takes an overnight HRV reading automatically, which is part of the “readiness” metric. Based on the sources I found, taking a reading during the night is very accurate, but I wanted to check so I did a month-long comparison of overnight Oura and the three morning readings. The result was that the Oura overnight reading tracked along with the early morning readings, so I know just use the Oura’s reading and don’t bother with the apps.

No discrepancy as described by Marco Altini?
With the overnight readings being influenced by late evening stuff like late dinner, workouts, alcohol?
I could definitely see a difference in my sleep quality score from late dinners and alcohol - and to a lesser extent in readiness. I didn’t notice much difference in my HRV that I recall. I’m 70 years old and my HRV is relatively low, ranging from teens to around 30ish. At the risk of boring you, I’m attaching the working spreadsheet that I kept last year. HRV comparison|690x239 As you can see, if I waited to record HRV after a morning mediation, my HRV was much higher.
interesting. And since I can’t get those Sessions to work in the morning anyways, I’ll try manual readings using the Oura Ring until the end of the week, and should that not work, I’ll just give the night readings a try and capture some month or two of nightly Oura Readings VS. Morning Elite HRV/Polar H10 to see how and if they differ.
