How to use HR and Pace zones based on lactate?

Hi,
I have a bit of difficulty in setting the right HR and Pace (based on lactate) zones in intervals. Well actually creating the zones is simple, I’ts more of a struggle in definitions and the proper use in monitoring in Intervals.

I’ve a client who performed an incremental treadmill test in a lab. At the end of each stage, a drop of blood was taken and analysed for lactate.
The lab returned the following 6 zones:
Recovery / zone 1 / zone 2 / zone 3 / ext.int. / max
The client’s LT1 is halfway zone 2. LT2 is at the end of Z3.

In Intevals I’ve split up zone 2 in a part below LT1 and above. This is to make workout programming easier. See pic below for my set-up.

But now monitoring in Intervals is a bit of a mess/harder. As in my case the easy zone <LT1 is Z3 in intervals. Intervals does not see Z3 as easy.

Any recommendations how to set-up the zones? Or make programming workouts easier?

Thanks.

Sorry i dont get , because you can change the values click in this , like the pic below

Perhaps my question is not clear.

I’m aware of how to change the zones.
The point is that did split zone 2 in two; one part below LT1 and the other part above.
So the actual question should be; does anyone advise this splitting?
I did split the zone in two so I could easily program a workout when I want the client to stay below LT1.

But having so many “easy” zones, will that disrupt the feedback from intervals?

I notice I have a hard time formulating what I really mean. Hope someone understands.

Thank you.

im not the best person to help - But in Fitness Tab you can just put some Z1+Z2 and Z3 , same color (below LT1) , and Let Z4-Z6 another color.

I dont think will solve all , bc still appear and calculate all zones , but i think you can understand and see what going on.

Besides that , You the Coach and your Athlete need to know this splits , doesnt matter if you know what you are doing - I advise use RPE , too see if your athlete is really in the Zone you want,

But other coaches can give you more insights.

The way intervals is set up now, having 3 easy zones will mess up the classification in the Totals-section, which is based on a 3 zone model where only Z1-2 are counted as easy, meaning that your Z3-zone 2 will be counted as moderate intensity, as you seem to have discovered. This will also affect the colouring of the zones when building workouts.

An option to create a Z0 would be nice for this kind of setup. Or an option to select if a given zone should be counted as easy, moderate or hard. Until then I cant see any other solution than to merge two of these zones?

Hi Jonas,

Yes, I think you nailed it. Thanks.

Your suggestion will be a nice addition to intervals. Don’t know if @david would agree.

I think for now I switch back to a normal set-up.

I very much like the idea of giving each zone a classification in the Easy, Moderate, Hard domain.
And it might be easier for david to implement.
