Bike/Trainer Hygiene

Hi,

I do a lot of training on a Wahoo Kickr with an old mountain bike as the chassis. The power readings come from the Kickr.

On the road, I have a Canyon Endurace with Stages Power meter. The power is get on my road bike is about half that reported from the indoor trainer.

I’m not too worried about this difference, except that it messes up my road history as on the road I’m always doing about half as well as on the trainer. Is there a way to have indoor and outdoor profiles so that I have an indoor FTP and an outdoor FTP?

Thanks,

Mark

You can set FTP for indoor and outdoor activities separately. But setting your outdoor FTP to half would mess up your load readings, lower wattage=lower work you did and that will make the fitness chart pointless and could lead to overtraining.
Probably the best solution would be to put your Canyon on the Kickr for a while and check if the problem is with Stages or Kickr, both can be calibrated and both should show similar power (maybe 5-10w diff). Sounds like you stages is reporting only one side without calculating for second leg. But without more data hard to tell.

Oohhh…reporting one side. That would explain a lot, including why I’m not seeing any L/R balance…

Not sure what kind of stages you have (single or double side) but you should check batteries in both and then try to maybe link/unlink them?
Form their site:

If a single sided power meter is purchased as an addition to an existing single sided power meter, the two must be linked together to perform as a LR unit. To link two Stages power meters, first download and install the Stages Power mobile app and ensure the power meters are awake by rotating the cranks.

Note: If you purchased your cranks as a pair, they are already connected from the factory.

  1. Open the Stages Power app on your compatible mobile device.
  2. Select the left and right side power meters from the discoverable devices list and then hit Connect.
  3. From the main screen, select Pair Tools, then select Link to connect the two sensors.
Note: Once two meters are linked as a LR unit, only the left power meter’s ANT+ ID will be visible when searching for new sensors. Only the left needs to be paired to your head unit.
  4. To use the power meters separately, repeat this process and select Unlink from the tools page of the app.

So, I think this fixed it, thanks. Note that the pairing such that one power meter reports for both works over Ant+. I don’t think it works over Bluetooth: you have to connect the two power meters separately with BT. Getting the connection to work over ANT+, so the Garmin saw the pair, was the trick for me.

According to Stages help pages, this shouldn’t be the case. It should present as 1 single BT id to your head unit etc. (same thing with my assioma Duo, only 1 bt is present. Although the app does provide an option to broadcast as left and right depending on head unit supports)

OK, thanks. In any case, I have it working right now
