alphaHRV (update)

I placed an order as well, but later got a message from them saying that the shipment is delayed and is scheduled for the end of September

I’ve got mine now! And its HRM doesn’t seem to work well for AlphaHRV… but the HRM and breathing sensors seem to be completely separate units, and I was able to just click on my H10 sensor.

Do you just use it for testing then use the power/heart rate values from the test for normal riding. Or will you use it on most rides and ride to the ventilation metric you get from the test?

I am using the tymewear hrm with alphaHRV for a long time. Try it using ANT mode in alphaHRV. Mine works fine

Honestly still have to figure out what to do. I’ll need to actually do that test first and that wasn’t the first thing on my schedule just yet … and the thing won’t be of much use to me until that’s out of the way.

Ah OK! I’ll give it another shot. My Edge was only showing it once via BT/BLE, no ANT+ sensor seemed to be reporting. Also it does seem that it supports only one BLE connection at a time while the Polar can be configured to allow two which is useful sometimes.

Did that work well for your? Here, it says the HR monitor uses one BT channel to connect to the breathing monitor.

Thanks. I’m seriously thinking about getting one but am a bit vague how I would use it long term and whether it would add anything to the AlphaHRV which I use a lot. My only issue with the app is the amount of artifacts I get irrespective of how I wear it. Also long term I think you’d have to figure out how to interpret the data on your own unless you want to cough up $150 dollars a year which I definitely wouldn’t

Are you referring to AlphaHRV?
How variable are your efforts?
I get minimal artifacts on steady rides, compared to those with more variability.

Yes with the Alpha App
Anecdotally sometimes it takes a long time after I start a ride on the trainer before the artifacts disappear. It seems to coincide with me having eaten immediately before or when I am fatigued.
The artifacts seem to increase outside

  1. at very low power outputs
  2. when my power output drops suddenly ie after a climb and the I coast going down
  3. just at seemingly at random moments when nothing has changed

Yeah, that’s the same scenario where I would get artifacts; after interval workouts and sometimes when power/HR is steady.

Tymewear has recently changed the HRM supplied with the strap. I have the previous one so my tests could not reproduce your case. However I have confirmed that the new one is supposed to be sending RR-ints at least in ANT mode as well.

Slightly off-topic, but it would be very interesting to hear some feedback on Tymewear. How convenient is it to use in real-time with the intensity readings for the VT1-VT2 zones? Do the readings align with DFA (Alpha-1)? And overall impressions – is it worth it? I ordered one mostly out of curiosity for new gadgets.

That’s what I’ve done for exactly the same reason.:joy:
I wondered if @Inigo_Tolosa may have consulted or something with them because this

looks very familiar

I’ve been using AlphaHRV purely for the Readiness score for the last 3 months and I’ve come to the conclusion it just doesn’t work for me and the chances of the reported Readiness meeting actual is probably 1 or 2 out of 10

Concrete example:
On Saturday I did a 100km ride (about 3 hours)
On Sunday I did a farly high intensity trail run (75 minutes, tempo run with lots of hill climbs)

After the above Garmin reported nearly 4 days recovery time - a bit high but 2 to 3 days was reasonable. I was tired.

On Monday I wanted to do 30 minutes Zwift recovery ride (Garmin advised a full rest day). I felt awful - heart rate shot up immediately and I struggled to keep up with the pack, while normally on that ride I’d be low Zone 2 heart rate wise. Alpha HRV reported a +10 Readiness!

Today (Tuesday), I had a good nights sleep and felt well recovered so did another Zwift ride. Heart rate was decent in relation to power output, Garmin was reporting + performance condition (meaning power / HR ratio was above my usual levels for my Vo2Max) and I got an FTP increase. AlphaHRV thought otherwise and went -1RA

This is pretty much representative of the last 3 months - when I am feeling good, chances are high I will get a - RA% and vice versa. I have good HR sensors - Polar H10 and Garmin HRM Pro Plus both of which produces acceptably low artefacts.

I’ve come the conclusion DFAa derived metrics don’t work for me at all and I’m just better using RPE - generally for me if RPE feels higher than expected on an easy session, I’m not ready. I had similar issues with Suunto ZoneSense (or Nonsense as I started calling it) which often would report unfeasibly high LT2 results (LT1 was typically fairly credible)

Does anyone else feel the same? Are you getting value from DFFa? I know Marco Altini walked back on a lot of the early claims / findings

I’ve never seen much value in either Garmin or AlphaHRV’s readiness values yes, honestly. And really why do I need a computer to tell me how I’m feeling?

Well I took time for the threshold test tonight. Starts at 70W, up by 20W every 3 minutes, so that took a while to finish. Then it saves the result and tells me they’ll analyse and review the result within the next 24h.

Which I hope will happen because then due to bugs that recording seems to have disappeared. Their phone app has a lot of rough edges, especially on my phone with smaller (dare I say normal, why are phones all huge these days…) display. :frowning:

Hello, looks like in Garmin graphs the name of the AlphaHRV fields are all messed up how could this be? I checked few activities and they look the same.

Hi Inigo,

re to my post in May, the same behaviour after updating the data field on Sep 09.
Readiness doesn’t work during the ride and is not shown afterwards despite HRV screen works fine.
This time I did 6 rides after the last regular Readiness score on Sep 07, but without success. Any ideas??
thanks

The update shouldn’t have erased permanent data saved by alphaHRV in the device.
Anyway, maybe some of the activities are not usable and you need some more in order to accumulate the minimum required days.
Let me know if it is shown after a couple of activities more.
