alphaHRV (update)

Curious thing happened on my ride yesterday with the AlphaHRV App. I had to use my Garmin 265 watch to broadcast my HR (couldn’t find my Polar HR monitor) and was very surprised to see data appear on my Head Unit. It turns out I was picking up my friend MIO heart rate strap!
I’ve no idea how valid the data was.
Anyway a Happy New Year to you all.

These data may be valid so that you monitor effort done by your friend and identify the best moment to attack for winning
More seriously, it occurred because of the settings you are using, connect to any/closest sensor.
If you are using ANT mode, set the ID of your HRM as the sensor to be used. If you don’t know that ID, check the settings after successfully pairing. It is shown there.
If you are using BLE, select connect to last after pairing to your sensor.

Thanks Inigo, I do need to change the settings. I’ve often thought that the guy setting the pace ahead of the train up a mountain should have his Garmin paired with the power and heart rate data of the GC contender and ride to those numbers.

@Inigo_Tolosa I’m a runner using Stryd for power-based training. Now, I’m trying to get started with AlphaHRV. I’ve set up my Garmin Forerunner 965 with my Garmin HRM Pro+ according to the instructions. The AlphaHRV data field is set to operate in BLE mode. Everything seems to be working all right - I see the Bluetooth symbol in the data field, it’s usually reporting 0% or close to 0% artifacts.

However, the 0.75 (aerobic) and 0.5 (anaerobic) thresholds seem way off. Even in an easy run, it will usually go to around 0.5 level. Could this be a problem with the Garmin HRM? Anything else I could check? As far as I know, there’s nothing to calibrate.

Thanks for your help.

Do you have a lot of artifacts when this happens?

This is known and occurs for lots of the users. The thresholds need to be determined per user and can’t be generalized.

So, is there a test protocol to determine the thresholds?

@Jools No, there’s basically 0% artifacts.

Aren’t the thresholds only valid for a dedicated ramp test, not when you’re running hey wildly in the forest and trying to escape zombies

Hi Inigo,

re to my post from last Sep, you asked me to let you know if it crashes again.

Today I had a crash again after 20min.
thanks

Is this the first crash since September?
Have you made any changes to your setup recently (hardware or software)?
Also, what version are you currently running?
If you don’t mind, could you share the activity FIT file with me?

thanks for your fast reply

  • yes, first crash since Sep

  • no hardware changes (Edge 840), regular firmware updates

  • alpha HRV was the 0.100.16

  • sure I can share the fit-file

Hmm, not sure how to share the file?

You can reach out to me through the ‘Contact Developer’ link in the CIQ Store.
The current version is 0.100.18. It probably isn’t the issue, but it’s always a good idea to keep things up to date, just in case.

yes sure already updated and fit-file sent

Thanks. I have just identified a potential issue that could happen at 20 min if alphaHRV has not been shown in the foreground screen yet. Not sure if this is the case here, but it is fixed in v0.100.19 (already submitted to the CIQ Store)

many thanks for your fast reaction, lets see if it solves the issue

update after today’s ride:
I did the same as yesterday, especially did not switch to the alphaHRV screen until readiness was calculated. After the chirp-sound after after 20min indicated the calculation, I swiped to the screen and it appears properly without error.
If this was the issue, as mentioned by Inigo, it could be fixed. Will keep an eye on it and report here if it happens again.

Thanks again for quickly resolving the issue.

I always switch to the aHRV screeen anyway to see if it has picked up my H10. I always try to connect to aHRV with ANT and Garmin with BLE.

Could you please navigate to where it’s described about how to do it? Some test or so? Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi @Inigo_Tolosa.

I have been observing a ‘problem’ with the AlphaHRV on the E1040S for a few days now.

I haven’t changed any settings, configurations, I have the same power meter, the same HR sensor but the AlphaHRV doesn’t display ‘Ra’ (after 20 minutes of course) and after the activity - in the FIT file also no ‘Ra’ parameter.

Any idea what could be the reason for the lack of “Ra”?

regards
Artur
