W Prime and Garmin Stamina

@WindWarrior
How did you set up your 530 to update your FTP?
And how are you doing it with the 840?

do you use the Garmin auto detect FTP option on both?

yes, auto-detect on both. Got an update last night, on the 840 I get frequent updates but they are on the low-end. From the beginning, immediately after transferring from 530 to 840.

I’m able to do a good job estimating ftp myself, so it’s not an issue. Just annoying to do say 60 minutes at 85% ftp and see the 840 estimate an ftp below the wattage I just completed.

Have you used both of them at the same time in the same ride and compare results?

no interest in doing that. Stated another way, since 2017 my WindWarrior ftp estimates and custom zones have always resulted in highly productive training.

When I get to the point of doing threshold work, I don’t need an algorithm to tell me where the border between stable and unstable physiology is. I can easily find it by triangulation and feel.

My biggest gripe with Garmin’s auto FTP is when it wants to lower the FTP setting following a workout with >80% execution score. Of course my NP was lower than my FTP, it was a “tempo” ride.

my 530 seemed to understand LTHR and %HR at lower power levels, and give good estimates.

My 840 will give LTHR estimates of say 159bpm, and I go out and do ~1 hour tempo:

at 85% my-est-FTP, with a HR in mid 140s (average of 146bpm).

And the 840 will estimate my FTP at something like 218-222W (can’t remember exact number). Despite knowing my LTHR is close to 160bpm, and that effort was roughly 91% LTHR.

Its like the 530 understood power-to-LTHR, and the 840 does not.
