TrainerAI — an Intervals.icu coach that lives in Telegram, writes to you first, and keeps no copy of your data

Hi all,

Yes, another AI coach. This category has plenty of them and most do the same three things, so instead of a feature list here is what I think actually makes this one different — and what it can’t do.

It lives in Telegram, and it starts the conversation

No app to install, no dashboard to remember to check. You write to it the way you’d write to a person: “what have I got today?”, “I slept five hours, should I still do the intervals?”, “move Tuesday’s session to Wednesday”, “look at my last four weeks”. No commands to memorise.

And it writes first, in your local time:

  • In the morning, if you have a session today.
  • At night, if that session never showed up — it asks why and rearranges the week.
  • Every Sunday, the week in review: how many planned sessions you actually did, and how the next one looks.
  • The day after your race.
  • Whenever you upload an activity, it comments on it as it arrives.

It never stores your training data

Activities and wellness are requested from Intervals.icu the moment they’re needed and discarded once it has replied. There is no copy anywhere. What is stored is your Intervals.icu id and name, the access token (encrypted), your Telegram link, subscription status and the conversation context (also encrypted, so it can pick up where you left off). Revoke access and we instantly lose the ability to read anything, because there was never a copy to read.

It works from a plan, not from one-off sessions

Scheduling single workouts is easy; what actually changes anything is a plan up to a date. Tell it the race and the day — plus distance, elevation and days per week if you have them — and it builds the whole thing, visible at trainerai.icu/plan. Every Sunday it looks at what you really did and adjusts the coming week. Skipped sessions count. Asking it to move a workout keeps it inside the plan (deleting and recreating it wouldn’t).

Multisport, four languages

Bike intensity goes out as power. Run, trail, hiking and strength as heart rate zones. Swim has no programmed target, the intensity is described in the text. Very short intervals get no target at all, because HR lags and isn’t a useful guide there.

It speaks Spanish, English, French and German, and takes both language and units from your Intervals.icu account.

What it can’t do

I’d rather you read this before signing up than after:

  • Pace never reaches the watch. Not as a zone, not as a percentage. When the target is heart rate, the pace is written into the step’s text so you can read it on screen even though the watch isn’t controlling it.
  • Workouts only arrive if planned workout upload to your device is enabled in your Intervals.icu account. That’s a setting on their side, not mine, and it is the number one reason someone doesn’t see their sessions on the watch.
  • Answers take 5–40 seconds, because it’s reading your data in the meantime. Send two messages in a row and the second waits its turn.
  • There’s a daily usage cap per athlete and one for the whole service. When you hit it, it says so plainly and tells you when it’s back, rather than going quiet.
  • It is not a doctor. Pain, injury or symptoms and it sends you to a professional. That is not for a language model to decide.

Trying it

  1. Connect your Intervals.icu account at trainerai.icu. It asks to read activities and to write to your calendar — without the second one it can’t schedule anything.
  2. Link Telegram from the dashboard and press start.
  3. Have your HR zones set. If you don’t, it offers estimated ones the first time you talk.

The first time only, it reads your history and comes back with one concrete finding about your training — before you’ve told it anything — so you can judge whether this is useful to you.

30 days, no card. After that it’s 9,99 €/month incl. VAT, cancel from the dashboard whenever. When a trial ends the coach stops answering, but your account, history and whatever is already on your Intervals.icu calendar stay yours and are left alone.

Full manual, including everything above in more detail: trainerai.icu/manual

I’m more interested in what’s broken than in what’s nice. /problema in the bot goes to a human, not to the coach, and /sugerencia for ideas. Happy to answer anything here too.

A short update, and one question I’d rather you answer than guess at

I posted here a month ago with a long write-up about a tool I built. This one is short.

Two things have changed. The first is that the price is now public: 9.99 €/month, VAT included, 14-day trial, no card needed. It’s on the site without signing up first. Keeping it behind the sign-up was a mistake on my part — I’d rather you know what it costs before you spend a minute on it.

The second is a question. I keep guessing what actually stops people from following a structured plan, and I’d rather have a straight answer than keep guessing. I tried to put this in a poll and the forum won’t let me yet, so just reply with a number:

  1. Not knowing what to do on a given day
  2. Adapting the week when life gets in the way
  3. Getting the session onto the watch in time
  4. Staying consistent when a week goes wrong

And if you feel like typing more: if you looked at it and decided not to sign up, what was the moment you decided? Any answer is useful, including “my coach already does this” and including “I don’t need an AI to tell me what to do”.

To be clear about what hasn’t changed: it still writes the sessions into your own Intervals.icu calendar, and it still keeps no copy of your data.
