Strava Price Increase

It’s a bit off topic but I also think that Strava add little value… the segments might be a funny thing but if you aren’t a top tier athlete no chance to show in ranks these days… Maybe we need a Strava rant forum subject. I feel like there is a paradoxe between their global usage/« power » and the little it adds to our sports life

If you want the social thing, a new app called Vital can do the job in a near future. It’s also health oriented with sleep or steps « gamification »

I totally agree @nfkb I have been a Strava subscriber for many years however more recently I have grown tired of the giving of kudoses for every activity that my friends do. Don’t get me wrong, I like my fellow athletes however giving them thumbs up for every time they leave the door, I’m over. Sure, I don’t need to but I’ve grown tired of the whole “social” aspect of Strava. Also, I don’t use all the features that I am paying for and soon will pay much more for so time has come to dump it. But before I do, I wanted to make sure that it was not going to affect my other platforms. If anyone else wants to rant about Strava in this thread, go ahead. I will be cancelling my subscription to Strava today and know that next time I go for a run, bike or swim, I’m not going to worry about how many useless meaning kudoses I’m getting. Rant over!

This article shows how ridiculous Strava is acting at this moment:

This was the Youtube clip that I saw the other day that prompted me to look at my Strava subscription and make the decision to dump them. My yearly fee has been jacked up to $99.99 per year. I’m certainly not getting that much value from them. I’d rather give those $ to @david to keep developing Intervals.icu as its an awesome platform.

Does anyone remember this?

Quick web search shows Relive remains cutoff from Strava to this day.

I think that’s my fear going forward as Strava looks to try to capture more revenue by essentially holding their customers hostage and closing down their API.

Any other places we should be aggregating our data that Intervals can pull from? I’m using Trainerroad when not riding outdoors, with a Hammerhead headunit.

Just remember that you don’t have to delete your account, unless your feel that it should never have existed, or you no longer feel they need your data.

I’ve permanently deleted it. Garmin Connect, Intervals and Training Peaks is all I need to manage my training.

I use Starva mainly for two things: the social aspect and after a race to take a peek at flybys.

Free account is enough.

Don’t worry, I never subscribed to Strava (AFAIR), and the only thing I really miss is the rankings to see by how much I suck compared to other amateurs on my preferred segments, and to see my own progress. But I get all of that on RWGPS for free - though I subscribe to their service for half of the year, when I’m not stuck inside, on the trainer. And as I have mentioned, fewer users on RWGPS means that I can climb the rankings :stuck_out_tongue:
I agree with you, it’s quite annoying to spend time giving kudos to every one. I try to limit myself to those who get real PRs, and to those who publish nice photos of their rides.

Because Garmin connect doesn’t play nice with my Wahoo Head Unit. I use my Garmin watch for running, but outdoor cycling I use a Wahoo Bolt. I have to manually upload the file to get it to display in Garmin Connect. I admit I haven’t looked recently so maybe they work together now.

@Timothy_M_Walsh

GC and Strava work together! Strava pushes to GC or GC can push to Strava, depending on which is the primary system and which is the secondary system. I have the same setup as you:

  • Garmin watch for running
  • Wahoo Bolt AND garmin watch for Cycling (I like having a backup incase something happens to the bolt upload. You can clearly see my priorities haha)

After a run:

  • GC > Strava > Intervals

After a ride:

  • GC > strava > Intervals
  • Wahoo > strava > intervals
  • Wahoo > strava > GC
I go ahead and delete the watch upload in Strava if the bolt upload is successful. That also deletes the intervals data as well but leaves the GC data

The reason why I like GC is because of the body battery/stress so I like data in GC for all of my activities.

Would not work for me because Strava strips all ‘special fields’ like L/R balance, dev fields, resp rate, dfa-a1.

I think we can just download directly from Wahoo to Intervals?

If you connected Garmin account all activities are already synced both from Garmin and Strava.
Intervals handle that and prefer Garmin over Strava data.
So, if you delete/stop using Strava nothing will change with activities WHICH ARE SYNCED FROM BOTH ACCOUNTS.
If synced ONLY from Strava, that activitiy will be deleten (as per Strava rules).

They are not mirror. I presume you are using Garmin device.
Strava takes Garmin file strips what it doesnt need/want and publish your activity.
That makes Strava activity copy, and not perfect since it misses some info, of Garmin activity.

Flyby work for free accounts ?
Are you sure ?

I haven’t seen Flybys in my paid Strava account for a few years so I doubt it’s in the free version.
Back to the topic in hand, this price increase is probably the straw that breaks this camel’s back

I regulary check Flybys but there is so few people that my presumption is that it shows only premium users.

I’m on the Free account and for me to use flyby, I need to PUBLIC my rides (which I dont usually do)

also, flybys has limited people because Strava turned it off by default some time ago (it was default yes). I think it was a fiasco w/ some US military secret base got ended up there in public

We sure can. I’ve quit Strava when they wanted me to pay for maps → gpx.studio is free and way better.

So I never had Strava linked to intervals. My data comes from Garmin (running, walking, swimming, skiing) and Wahoo (cycling, wahoo systm)
