Strava activity visibility update

If you think about it, we are in 2024 and we have no reliable data log, especially one dedicated solely to that purpose: storage and hub. All our training history is on platforms that either: a) think they own our data, b) want to implement AI solutions at all costs, or c) are just bad (like Training Peaks). I understand this is expensive—storage is costly—not to mention development. I’d rather pay for a reliable data log/hub than keep paying for Strava!

As a full-time professional coach who has been making a living from this work for over 10 years, these implementations are alarming and deeply concerning. I don’t rely solely on Intervals for my services—I use other platforms too—but I do use Intervals for certain purposes. I know many coaches who depend entirely on Intervals for their work. Honestly, I don’t understand how other coaches aren’t freaking out about this situation. Sure, “get the data directly from the source,” you say. But here, a significant portion of athletes use devices like IGPsport, Bryton, Xoss, Magene, etc. Good luck trying to get training files from those athletes without Strava’s help!

Did the names of the activities stay the same? I wouldn’t want to default to names like “Lunch Ride”.

Hi there!

If I tick this box, will rides from Zwift that are synced to Garmin keep going to Intervals? Currently they get here via Strava (obvies).

Will there be integration for hammerhead/karoo?

Hi Luca,
I use a Karoo as well and sync my data via Suunto as described here: [SOLVED] Hammerhead to Intervals.icu (Use Suunto as middleman) - #5 by David_Bonnett
It works well and brings through all the fields that I use, including L/R power balance from my Favero pedals.

Take a look at my reply to Luca’s question re: Karoo that went up as you posted

They’ll cut themselves in the fingers. If they are not providing this service, somebody else will.

What’s do you like about its route planner?
I mainly use plotaroute.com (since I don’t have Strava premium anyways) and have found it to be pretty good. (And then import it into Garmin Connect)

I’m think possibly Healthfit will also get an email same as David from Strava.

Maybe RunGap too.

Strava is a prime example of how trying to be an everything app just isn’t possible without big compromises for nearly everything. Strava does social media and segments/leaderboards (and perhaps routes) well, but they do so many other things, including analysis, really poorly. They’re way too big to react quickly and implement/tweak features based on community feedback.

IMO, the strength of Intervals is that it isn’t a social media app, that it lets us focus on the data without all the other distractions. David has finite amounts of time and resources, and social media requires a lot of both. I can only imagine it would be to the detriment of the data/analytics side of things to try and make Strava 2.0

According to DC Rainmaker an app like intervals.ICU isn’t allowed to do any analysis on the date either under the new rules. So pretty much any screen would break the rules

Thank you for this.

When I uploaded the zip file, the list of “Strava” activities slowly ticked down to zero, as they were replaced with “Upload”. Great user experience David!

Strava Bulk download requested!

Connected Zwift to my otherwise dormant Garmin Connect account.

Once I have Strava Bulk uploaded here and confirm that Zwift is properly sending data to Garmin Connect, I’ll connect through there and disconnect from Strava for everything.

I have 7816 activities in Strava. With luck there will be none added after Dec 1, 2024.

Thanks for all the work on this, David.
I’ve also cancelled my Strava subscription. Very poor attitude from them!

I realized that I have all my activities were going to both Garmin and Strava: cycling (Garmin and Zwift), running (Garmin), and rowing (Concept2). Everything but running was coming into Intervals from Strava, so I’ve turned off Strava as a source of actvities. If everything now comes from Garmin, as I expect, I’m definitely cancelling my Strava subscription.

While I do like some of the premium features, like the heatmaps and routing when I go to a new place, it’s not worth the price to encourage anti-competitive behaviour like this. If Strava acts as DC Rainmaker suggests they could with these new terms, David’s going to have a hard time using it as a data source. Nice to see Ray giving credit to David for announcing the problem first.

Yes, it did; where I had named these that were relevent.

No, Garmin doesn’t pass on data that is not recorded on a Garmin device.
However, David is currently working on the Zwift integration.

This can be done via Suunto. You do not need a Suunto device. [SOLVED] Hammerhead to Intervals.icu (Use Suunto as middleman)

I have contacted them but haven’t received a response yet. It is helpful if MyWhoosh users ask for the integration.

Thats exactly what Intervals.icu wants to be. That is why the API is open and everyone gets an API key.

Unfortunately not. Garmin does not pass on activities from non-Garmin devices to services like Intervals.icu. Direct Zwift integration with Intervals.icu is in progress. Right now you need to use Dropbox as a conduit.

@Nik_Om_Cinderella_Ri Well I said I USED it, not that I LIKED it  However, for me the reason for using the route planner of Strava was the Veloviewer plugin; with that you could easily see if you have ticked a tile off - or not.
But since I did it long before without this plugin there will be for sure a life after Strave ;)! Thanks for the hint, will check it out. Also had a first look yesterday on ridewithgps
