[SOLVED-WORKAROUND] Duplicate Workouts btwn Intervals & Connect (Garmin Issue)

Hi all, I have what I think is a fairly basic issue but I can’t seem to figure it out on my own. I am in the process of completing a HR-based running plan on Garmin Connect as part of a bastardized Training for the New Alpinism program.

So far, I’ve been syncing my running workouts from Garmin Connect to Intervals and add my strength workouts in Intervals. The strength workouts appear to sync back to Garmin Connect and then back once more to Intervals, resulting in duplicates, I think? Does anyone know a better way of doing this?

Also, my activities from Garmin Connect do not have a duration once imported in Intervals. At first I thought this was because they have a “Lap Button Press” cooldown but this persists even once I edit them to be a fixed length.

I’m also assuming there is no way of setting week start to Sunday? I did see a few threads about this but they were quite old.

Thank you in advance!

I have a similar issue… all my activities are synced only from Garmin Connect and invariably duplicate copies of Strength & Yoga activities appear in intervals.

These quite often appear several days after the activity and sometimes I can get four or five copies. These copies don’t contain all the metrics of the original.

I’m pretty sure that you have 2-way sync on Garmin Connect and that you are ‘Planning’ your Strength and Yoga sessions.
What is happening, is that you have in the calendar one entry for the Planned Workout and a second one for the Finished activity. The planned one is send to Garmin, executed and the finished one comes back to Intervals.
If you open one with time, you will open the finished activity with metrics (HR for example if you are wearing a HR monitor). If you open one without time, it will be what you had planned. No measurements, only the sets and reps that you had planned.
For endurance activities, Intervals is pretty good at ‘Pairing’ planned to finished because it has duration, intensity to resolve compliance.
For strength sessions you can ‘pair’ manually. Just drag one with time over the one without time to pair them.
If you don’t like this behaviour, you can change the setting in Options on the calendar. Unchecking 'Past Planned will hide the planned workouts in the past. The planned will remain visible for today and the future. The past ones will no longer be shown.

If planned and finished are not paired correctly (auto or manual), compliance for the week will not be correct.
For the week to start at Sunday, this has not been implemented yet.

Similar I guess. Open up some of those to check if they are Planned workouts or finished activities.
If it opens like this:

it is a planned workout

And like this:

It is a finished activity.

Many thanks for your reply.

Mine are unplanned activities - I’ll take a closer look at the detail of the entry the next time it happens.

In that case, double check on the settings page to make sure you’re not getting those duplicates from other sources.
It’s basically impossible to get the same activity from Garmin multiple times. Simply because they have a routine running that disallows requesting the same data over and over. This means, that if you delete a Garmin activity in Intervals, you will almost surely need to download it manually if you want to recover it.
And if they truly come from Garmin Connect, they should be identical because Garmin ONLY forwards the "original fit file’, nothing else when it comes to activities.
Check Strava and Dropbox settings to make sure.

Thank you for the reply, MTCD - I really appreciate it.

Earlier this morning, all of my planned Garmin activities from Connect were duplicated and after a page refresh only today’s are duplicated. I deleted the activities showing time (30 m Core, 45 m Max Str) that were made in Intervals and planned everything in Connect last night after posting. Here’s a screenshot of what all the Garmin activities look like in my Intervals when I click on them. You can see that Core, Max Str, and Treadmill have doubles in the screenshot. My Garmin Connect does not show past activities so duplicates in the past aren’t an issue.

Here is what my Connect looks like for Tues-Thurs.

Thanks again!

I only use Garmin and this is what my settings look like ATM.

I’m not super confident because I rarely use the planner function but something seems to create a loop.
Where do you create your planned workouts?
If you create both in Intervals and in Garmin Connect, things are considered different and you create a loop.
If you want to use Intervals as workout creator, don’t create them in Garmin.
If you want to use Garmin Connect for planning, uncheck Upload planned workouts in Intervals.
It might be better for someone else, more experienced with the workout planner, to chime in.

Well, at first I was pulling workouts into Intervals from Connect and also creating workouts in Intervals. I then decided to commit to Connect since that’s where I get the HR-based running plan and in an attempt to address the copies. Every workout as of my last post originates from Connect. I have since unchecked the “Upload planned workouts” in settings and nothing has changed on the Intervals calendar.

When I refresh the activities page I see copies (duplicates, triplicates) of all my Connect workouts appear and then disappear as if the calendar is syncing and removing activities that have already been uploaded. They disappear after a half second or so except for the copies on today. I am keen to see whether I get copies of tomorrow’s activities tomorrow.

I would like to use Intervals for all of my planning eventually. I updated my entire plan to start on Mondays as opposed to Canada’s usual Sunday.

Thanks again for your help!

I deleted all of today’s workouts from Connect and now there’s a duplicate of tomorrow’s workout.

And when I re-added today’s workouts in Connect the duplicate on tomorrow disappeared and today’s reappeared.

Could this be a bug in Intervals and how it displays Connect’s data?

When I go into Options > Edit Calendar (for Garmin) > and uncheck “Events are planned workouts” the calendar syncs and a set of the duplicated workouts do not update, but everything else does.

As of approximately 4 PM PST (12 AM GMT), tomorrow’s workout is duplicated.

Tx so much for trying to help out @MedTechCD but it seems this is a Garmin problem. @pclangemeyer I pulled your calendar from Garmin twice a couple of minutes apart and it comes back like this:

The “UID” field is supposed to be a stable unique identifier but it is changing every time and causes the dups.

Intervals.icu has a workaround for this problem that I have just tweaked so it will sort this out (same day, name and description? same workout). I will deploy Thursday AM (GMT+2).

Thanks for looking into this David! The different unique identifiers is frustrating. I am guessing there’s nothing I can do on the Connect side to remedy this…

Thanks for this… I was waiting for the issue to recur and despite being certain I was only syncing from Garmin - the duplicate activities have indeed been created by a loop. I hadn’t realised that HealthFit was also looking at my activities.

All sorted, thanks again.

Not sure if my issue is related but I plan my workouts in intervals, these then get sent to Garmin. When start a run on my Garmin watch the planned workout (from intervals) shows. If I select to do the workout, when I finished and the completed activity is posted back to intervals from Garmin I end up with a completed activity and linked planned workout, e.g. with %compliance, but also a duplicate planned workout.
If I chose to ignore the planned workout on my Garmin watch and just run, on completion back in intervals I get the completed activity with linked planned workout only (no duplication). Any ideas?
