Service - Strava compatible APIs - So you can do whatever you want with your data

I am building a service that is compatible with the Strava APIs.
Existing manufacturers of devices, will be able to easily integrate, as everything they have built for strava will work.
The service acts as simple conduit, between the device and your Apps (intervals.icu for example).
Just as before your activity would get pushed to Strava and then from there to other apps. The follow is exactly the same, with the same APIs and webhooks.

I ran into Terra API yesterday, is that similar?

Terra is very expensive IIRC.

A bit simpler actually.
Here we are just copying the strava apis, which would make it very easy for manufacturers and existing apps to support it, then we just send the data through from one to the other.

But this might still not be something that @David can allow to be used with Intervals. The issue seems to potentially be that if Strava is anywhere in the sync loop then they might have the ability to limit what can be done with the data thereafter. Until @David has his discussion with Strava we can try to find loopholes to get around the issue but if they are not acceptable to Strava & probably written in the T&Cs as an exception then @David might not be able to support them as needs to be cogniscent of his relationship with them. And the more people try to find loopholes & post/discuss them on here the more that it might complicate his discussion with Strava if they feel that he is allowing the discussion on the Intervals Forum.

fair enough.
Strava can indeed try to claim that, but this would be no different to getting the same data directly from your garmin device, which ultimately also ends up on strava and intervals.icu if you wish to do so.
So it would be hard to claim it is their data, as it never went through their system.
Further apps would no longer need to rely on strava, connecting to the activity conduit or the strava would be the same, which means manufacturers would just have to implement it once. (ie most already have)

I will definitely have a look at this. Intervals.icu really needs the original activity file which isn’t provided by Strava at the moment. So it’s even simpler than providing Strava compatible APIs.

What keeps you from doing the same sort of rent-seeking Strava is doing in the mid to long term? There are already countless services like this, what’s needed is something which has critical mass to convince products and services to integrate the API, and which is resilient against corporate greed to avoid another Stravapocalypse down the road.

Honestly, intervals.icu as a hub would be great. I trust this site way more than most of the others.

By providing Strava APIs, it would make it definitely easier for existing manufacturers to integrate, and the same goes for existing third party apps.

From there we can definitely offer an API to allow fetching of the original api file.

The hard part here will be to get any manufacturer to integrate.
