You can now save activity filters and re-use old ones from the saved list. Click the “Saved” drop down to save the current filter or to select a previously saved filter:
The filters are available wherever activities are being filtered, not just in the activity list view.

Quick question - does this include saved “columns” against filters? Eg. I have Max HR column shown on one filter but not on another?

No it is just the filters. It’s a more general solution to that problem (works everywhere activities filters show up). What you want would probably be best handled by adding tabs to the activity list view and each tab remembers the active filter and columns.
I have implemented tabs and will deploy Tuesday AM (GMT+2).
