Routa Endurance: an iOS coach and workout player

Hi all,

I’ve spent the last 6 months or so of evenings building an iOS app which integrates with the Intervals.icu API (using the API key), and it went live on the App Store last week. So, I figured it’s time to post it here and get some honest feedback.

The problem I wanted to solve: getting the most out of the limited training hours I have. I train 5–6 days a week with varying schedules (family duties), and every morning I’d end up staring at my HRV and sleep numbers trying to decide what to do today. So I built an app that does that for me. It pulls activities and wellness from Intervals.icu, scores readiness from HRV, resting HR, sleep and recent load, and gives one answer: go, dial it back, or rest. It shows which signals fired and which thresholds tripped, so you can disagree with it when it’s wrong.

It builds the training plan around the time you actually have, and pushes workouts to the Intervals.icu calendar to be executed on other platforms (I use Garmin and Zwift). The app also has a built-in workout player, so that my wife can use the app for workout execution too. It supports smart trainers on Bluetooth, and can also be used outdoors with a power meter and GPS to record rides.

Design choices:

  • It’s rules-based, not AI. Deterministic logic which produces the same output when inputs don’t change. No need to second-guess an AI-generated plan.
  • Works as a standalone app too without any integrations enabled.
  • Privacy first: the logic runs on device. Routa has no backend or accounts.

The core functionality is free (readiness, training plan, workout library and the workout player, Intervals.icu sync for today’s workout).
A subscription covers the multi-week planner, editing the plan, planning around your own rides, and race-week taper. There’s a one-month free trial if you want to poke at everything. Subscription is available at an affordable price at launch, just 3.99 €/month or 24.99 €/year.

Roadmap:

  • Android version
  • HR-only training
  • running support beyond easy runs
  • swimming
  • exporting data for your favorite AI tool

I’d especially love feedback from anyone with sparse wellness data or lower volume. The readiness thresholds are tuned on my own (and wife’s) data more than I’d like, and that’s where I expect it to misfire. Same goes for the calendar view: Routa shows its own plan alongside your Intervals.icu calendar, but on the free tier you can only push today’s workout, not edit or push the rest. I’m not sure that split is obvious in the UI, so tell me if it’s confusing.

And thanks David for the API and this place. Routa wouldn’t exist without it.

Hope you like it!

Kim

Quick follow-up on this one.

First, thanks for the feedback so far. It already led to a couple of fixes: Apple Health HRV quirks and improved workout library. Keep it coming.

Second, as a thank-you to early adopters here: I set up an offer code that gives 3 months of Pro free on the yearly subscription.

Redeem link: https://apps.apple.com/redeem?ctx=offercodes&id=6783058406&code=ROUTALAUNCH

Pro has been on launch pricing until now, and that ends Sep 1. New pricing will be 6.99€/month and 39.99€/year. Existing subscribers keep the price they subscribed at. So redeeming the code before Sep 1 gets you the 3 free months and locks in the 24.99€/year launch rate for as long as you stay subscribed.

Still especially interested in how readiness behaves for anyone with sparse wellness data, and how the calendar view with Intervals.icu events on it makes sense on the free tier.

Routa 1.2.0 is out. Thank you for the beta feedback!

Most notable features:

  • Improved workout library and plan variety
  • Major improvements and minor fixes to intervals.icu calendar sync
  • Sensor logic rebuilt. Multiple power sources supported, and a trainer bridging a chest strap now delivers heart rate instead of quietly dropping it.
  • Power match. Using both power meter and a smart trainer? ERG now holds your power meter on target, not the trainer’s own reading, so your indoor rides land on the same scale as your outdoor ones.
  • Adjust your ride length before starting

Routa Pro is free for 28 days when you install.

And as a thank you to this forum: the code THANKYOUINTERVALS gets you six months at 50% off. Enough to see you through the winter, monthly, cancel whenever you like. Redeem it by 30 September.

Feedback still very welcome, this thread or DM.

Cheers,
Kim

Routa 1.5.0: improved plans, workout progression and race taper logic

Hi all,

Indoor season is here, so it’s time for an update. Since 1.2.0 Routa has spread well beyond this forum, to riders on a few hours a week, riders on fifteen, people building to a race and people who just want some structure. Most of what changed since then is about making the plan fit all of them.

Plans

  • The planner is rebuilt. Each day is planned from the riding you’ve actually done. If you ride as planned, the days ahead stay put.
  • Your week only asks for what your time allows. Hard sessions keep their size, easy riding spreads across the days you have, and a short week drops easy riding first. If your available time is what’s holding your fitness back, Coach tells you.
  • Rest days go on the days you can use least, so your riding days don’t bunch up.
  • Race week is free for everyone. Add an A or B race and the days before it taper automatically. You don’t need Pro.

Workouts

  • Workouts progress with every ride. Each hard session builds a little on your best recent one. If you miss one it’s repeated, and if you ride harder than planned the next one goes up.
  • Adjust the difficulty of any planned workout. Making it longer adds easy riding, so the hard part stays the same.
  • FTP tests are in the library (20 min and Ramp). Ride one any time, or plan it ahead with Pro.
  • Every workout shows its main set at a glance, e.g. 5 × 5 min @ 163 W.

Indoor rides

  • Your paired trainer and HR strap connect on their own when you open the ride screen.
  • Countdown beeps before each interval change. You can mute them from the ride screen.
  • A small celebration when you hit a milestone, such as a new FTP estimate or your biggest week yet.

Readiness and feedback

  • Readiness picks up a slow HRV slide. A week about 10% below your usual turns it amber, and the plan eases off.
  • Short nights shorten or ease the day.
  • Routa asks how every ride and run felt, and your feel and effort ratings sync back to Intervals.icu. Insights shows how you’ve felt over time next to effort vs. expected.

Get Routa on Apple App Store. Pro is still free for 28 days when you install.

Cheers,
Kim
