Hi,
I’ve been planning my own season via intervals.icu, but for my run and bike workouts Garmin connect does not seem to recognized the workout structure. For example, I have the following run workout planned on intervals.icu:
- Warmup 40m press lap
- .25mi
- .25mi press lap
- .25mi
- .25mi press lap
- .25mi
- .25mi press lap
- .25mi
- .25mi press lap
- .25mi
- .25mi press lap
- .25mi
- .25mi press lap
- .25mi
- .25mi press lap
- .25mi
- .25mi press lap
- .25mi
- .25mi press lap
- .25mi
- .25mi press lap
- Cooldown 20m press lap
but when I attempted to do the workout on my watch, it did not work. Looking at the workout details in the Garmin connect app showed the notes properly, but only warmup and warmdown intervals without even their time targets.
I’ve had some success in the past with syncing cycling workouts to Zwift, but unsure why Garmin can’t handle these.
I haven’t used distance based workouts, but try putting a 0 in front of the decimal. Or, confirm the format is right by using integer distances.
Have you tried to use the “Add Step” function in the workout builder and read this guide: Workout builder - Guide - Intervals.icu Forum
This syntax is useless: no target, “press lap” needs to be placed directly after the “-”. And bonus: the repeats can be added easier…
For example, the syntax based in HR zones (be sure they are configured in the settings…):
- Press lap 40m Z2 Pace intensity=warmup
10x
- 0.5mi Z2 Pace intensity=interval
- Press lap 0.5mi Z0 Pace intensity=recovery
- Press lap 20m Z2 Pace intensity=cooldown**
On a Garmin device, “press lap” always works, it wil skip end the interval and skips to the next one.

Hmm yeah I have, but tried using the “text to display to athlete” to display some text which will turn a 20min press lap with “warmdown” text into
Thanks for the 10x tip, I’ve just been copy + paste which is a bit of a PITA
Was able to get it to work using the suggested format minus pace targets (really dislike them when I am running on hilly terrain where uphill/downhill pace varies a lot), but can’t get the time targets on the “press lap” intervals to show up in garmin. Either way, this is a lot better than having to keep an eye on the watch until 400m is hit when running intervals
Well you figured it out… your original text missed the “-” at the start of the lines, and the intensity targets. If you don’t like pace or any other target, at least give it some HR target, maybe Z1-Z5 if you really don’t want a prescription and want to avoid annoying beeps.
Garmin does seem to ignore any volume hints when you say LAP PRESS, or maybe intervals is just not exporting them. You canceled parse the FIT file that had been exported with e.g. runalyze’s FIT file viewer. If the file does contain both the miles and the LAP PRESS then it’s Garmin’s fault, otherwise maybe give some feedback here to the devs…
If you want a minimum distance or time with your LAP PRESS laps, maybe for recovery, make separate lines for those.

I think this was just the markdown formatting from the post I made using quote block instead of code block. For me, I’d ideally not have the “press lap” text and instead have something like “threshold uphill” and “recovery until lap press”, but I guess without HR pace or power targets it’s hard to do this. I don’t mind having targets, but Garmin’s alerts when you fall outside of a range or target are super annoying and I’d rather have no targets on my workouts since I am writing my own.
