Hi, I’m considering buying a pixel watch but I still don’t quite understand if activities (mostly runs) would sync with intervals.icu. Would I have to use strava, and then sync from there? Is there way to avoid strava? (especially in light of recent announcements)
Right now I have a wahoo rival, which works fine as intervals can pull activities directly from there. AFAICT there is no wahoo app for the pixel watch.
To be clear: I don’t care about other fitness metrics like sleep, HR tracking throughout the day, steps, or other. I just want to sync my runs, and maybe strength sessions.
I just recorded my first Pixel Watch activity today. Been using Garmin products since there were Garmin products.
I used the $5 SportWerks app. It natively syncs to Intervals.ICU. It supports my Stryd. It’s one of only two apps I’m aware of that make a WearOS device anything close to being a proper sports watch.
The other option would be to sync the horrid, horrid, native Fitbit app to Strava and Strava to Intervals.ICU. But Fitbit won’t export non-GPS (treadmill, smart trainer) activities to Strava. And we’ve recently seen, as you mention, how Strava is locking down their API and can no longer be trusted as the universal data hub so many treat it as.
Or one could use the Strava app, but it’s half-baked on WearOS and makes the Fitbit app look like a polished gemstone.
Nice! Thanks for the reply. I was not aware of that app. Sounds promising.
Can you confirm you do not need to have your phone with you for sportwerks to werk?
I can confirm. I have an LTE watch, but I presume it would sync over WiFi/BT if you recorded w/o the phone.
It has an option to use Watch OR Phone GPS inside the settings. But that’s to save power on the watch by offloading the GPS work to the phone, and is only an option.
Just purchased a pixel watch 3, and installed sportswerk. I recorded an activity, but intervals.icu sync failed. Not sure how to troubleshoot this further, I will try syncing with strava as well (the strava app on my watch also seems flaky: it recorded only one out of four activities).
I recorded an activity, but intervals.icu sync failed.
Launch Sportwerks again, go to the “Diary”, and manually upload the activity from there. You can do this either from the watch app or the phone app - your diary should be synced between them.
My wife still uses Sportwerks, and she’s suffering this problem (sync to Intervals.ICU not happening automatically) about 1/3 of the time. She is also experiencing significant heart rate dropouts from the watch optical sensor if she does not reboot her watch daily. She’s on the Pixel Watch 2.
I switched over to Gear Tracker II ($2/month subscription) because it, unlike SportWerks, actually logs ALL the Stryd metadata and syncs to Stryd Powercenter. There is also some Stryd power inconsistencies I saw with SportWerks that weren’t yet resolved by the developer. (I was getting SMALL inconsistencies between SW and Garmin distances and between SW and Garmin instantaneous power where it looked like SW was occasionally duplicating power numbers).
Gear Tracker II has an extremely customizable appearance, can be configured from the phone app, and supports workouts, though I haven’t used that feature yet. SW is serving my wife fine, but I’m glad I switched to GTII.
Thanks for the info. I’ll look into Gear Tracker, though I’m not so stoked on having another subscription.
What I’m doing now is to use the Srava app directly, and then get stuff synced to IICU via that. Not my favorite approach, especially in light of recent Strava announcements.
I briefly tried using the Fitbit app. In addition to wanting to give me a bunch of information I don’t care about, Strava sync also seems broken. And of course there is no IICU sync whatsoever.
