Hi there -
I’ve just discovered intervals.icu and I’m rather blown away. I was literally a day away from signing up for Training Peaks premium and possibly purchasing WKO5. I was not thrilled with Training Peaks but had already ruled out Today’s Plan due to bugs with importing. Intervals.icu seems at first look to address all the gaps I found in both platforms. I will certainly be contributing as soon as I confirm it’s going to work for me.
Here’s my question:
I’m trying to figure out the best way to import activities. Most of mine are in Garmin Connect. However, when I do Virtual rides with Rouvy, BKOOL, BigRIngVR, etc, I send them to Strava since there is no way to upload directly to Garmin. I often capture with my Edge 520 as well, but prefer to use the versions with map and elevation data. Plus the Edge never records the same distance as the data from the platform.
Right now, I’m using Fitness Syncer to send Virtual rides from strava to intervals and everything else from Garmin. I think this is working but I don’t get the source links as a result.
If I connect directly to both platforms, I think I’ll end up with duplicates. Is there a way to limit activity types imported from each platform?
But once you’re done w/ that, for normal day-to-day after that:
Auto-Sync: #1 Garmin → Strava #2 Bkool/Zwift → Strava
Strava does have some amount of mech to ensure #1 and #2 (dups so to speak) . It works most of the time. (Are you seeing duplicates in Strava?)
Intervals.icu also has dup checking mechanism and some of the duplicate checking mech as well. (Here’s a screenshot of a workout synced from Strava → Intervals and BreakAway → Intervals. They are “lumped” together) Note: I also have my Garmin recording as well (and data is sent to Strava also. Strava filters that activity out since I believe it flags that as a duplicate from my BreakAway App)
When you say.
I don’t exactly know what you mean. You mean you want to be able to click on the link and you will be redirected to Strava/Garmin for that particular activity? If yes, not sure how that is done.
My Setup (Note: I do not connect Garmin to Intervals. It’s all Strava. Strava has a API call limit, so sometimes the data from Strava → Intervals may be late, but intervals will queue and do a retry when there’s API calls available)
Outdoor workouts
(Note : I record on 2 garmin watches.)
Garmin is set to auto-Sync w/ Strava & TP (Free)
Completed workout, Garmin1 & Garmin2 auto loads to GC
since GC is setup to auto-Sync w/ Strava, only 1 workout 99.9% of the time is synced to Strava. (means duplicates are filtered by Strava. I manually delete one of the workouts from GC and TP.
BreakAway is set up to Directly Upload to Strava & Intervals
1 Activity in GC (auto-Sync w/ Strava - but this is filtered out by Strava)
1 Activity in Strava (auto-Synced via BreakAway App)
1 Activity in Intervals.icu (it merges the activity pulled from Strava and directly uploaded from BreakAway)
TakeAway - i’ve not had too much issues (if at all) of having to delete activities synced to Intervals.icu. It’s doing a bang up job of limiting duplicates.
Thank you. So as I understand it, all your Intervals data is coming from Strava. The only concern there is that Strava could force delete of all your data if they pull the plug on API access ,or if you decide to remove that link. That makes me pretty uncomfortable. I’d prefer Strava to be my last source - that is, only for activities not available anywhere else - which is the Virtual rides.
No. Not exactly. My BreakAway app also directly uploads to (both) strava and intervals. (intervals.icu filters and merges both these sources into 1 activity)
Yes. it’s under their TOS or API or something. David has listed it out somewhere in this forum.
If you remove the activity from Strava, it will auto-disappear from Intervals.icu as well. (I’ve not tried this scenario w/ my activites that are uploaded both directly to Strava and BreakAway to Intervals tho)
Depending on which virtual Ride apps you’re using, some of them has the option to sync the workouts to Dropbox? (For My BreakAway App, workouts are also uploaded to DropBox if you have it connected)
If on Zwift, (at least for the desktop version) the FIT files are stored somewhere in the computer and I guess you could always do an “alias” or “symlink” of sorts and have that folder linked to Dropbox. Then, you can just connect Dropbox To Intervals and you will bypass (of sorts) Strava.
Intervals.icu does detect duplicates between Strava and other sources (e.g. BreakAway or Garmin Connect) and will delete the Strava activity. It keeps the Strava ID so the Garmin activity will also have a link back to Strava.
Strava doesn’t pass things like L/R balance on to Intervals.icu. You need to use Garmin Connect or Dropbox or similar to see that in Intervals.icu.
Thanks Dave.
One thing I noticed is that after doing the full history import from Garmin, none of the Garmin links back to original work. I’m guessing that’s because those activities came in via the archive import rather than direct sync with the website. So if that’s true, my next new ride should be able to sync to Garmin. Will drop a note if not.
Cool, no worries.
By the way, let me just take this opportunity to say how happy I am to have discovered Intervals! It is an awesome tool. I continue to discover capabilities and it just works the way I would want it to. I was very frustrated trying out Training Peaks and Today’s Plan. I hope your user base is growing as fast as it should be.
Of course, I have a wish list but it’s already superior just as it is.
