I recently updated my edge 1040 to the latest firmware, version 28.20.
AFAIK, the edge devices only record data every second and do not have a “smart recording” option.
My latest ride post firmware update displays: “This activity has been recorded with approximately 2 seconds per data point. Intervals.icu works best with a data point every second. Please disable smart recording on your device if possible.”
It’s possible the firmware update is a red herring, just letting you know thats the only thing that changed on my side between rides to lead to this now being displayed on my latest ride.
garmin is always implementing a bunch of new bug with each new firmware release, reason why if anyone resigns form using garmin it is most of the time due to a number of small or bigger irritating bugs
on the topic: not sure if edge has same settings as garmin watches (newer used an edge device) but definitely on my garmin watch there is a setting for that:
settings->system->data recording->frequency
ps. from the getgo garmin is using smart recording for battery saving
Every version of firmware has some small glitch for a small number of users. Going back a level of firmware isn’t a great idea if the glitch is a once in a long time thing.
Love your generic answers…the only problem being, they solve non of the problems OP was writing about. Ofc you can say to him that he should just adapt, use smart recording, and for next months just wait until Garmin releases a new software and actually pray that is solves the bug. Reality with Garmin looks a bit different, their software is full of small bugs (just check their beta forums, 50-100 bugs for each iteration) there is no wise bug report (I mean there is but most of the time no one is responding) and there is little to no chance it will be fixed in couple of next months (garmin is for example solving the bug with skiing ftp for thousands of people who never went skiing for 3 years already, with no bright future). So yeahhh for me OP has two options here:
-if the device is under warranty, just go to Garmin and replace the thing, update the software, if it works it works if not replace again and ask for 1050 replacement (eventually pay some $$$)
(I would do just that bc 50% of the device price is going into a support anyways)
-downgrade the software to last working one
"Every version of firmware has some small glitch for a small number of users. "
btw if you extrapolate the percent of people using garmin beta forums and being invested enough to report bugs (and still hundrets of bugs are posted there) with the number of people using garmin devices, the number of people hit by this bug is probably in millions but most of them just don’t know bc they are not using intervals.icu or any other software where 1s recording is needed.
and:
downgrading a software to last working one is a common practice in any it related industry…ofc most of the brands have a much much better quality control then Garmin, the number of upgrades they pushed with huge bugs like no gps, no hr, battery drain for multiple devices is immense, just check their forums. Again there is a reason why people move from Garmin (some people of not all) and most of them love the product but hate the buggy software.
View the fit file second by second in intervals.icu and post a screenshot of the time and the power, I’m curious and I will get this to the right person on the Garmin 1040 team if necessary.
The 1040 automatically does 1s recording. You cannot force the device to do smart recording, it never had this option. This is why you won’t see a 1s recording option. 1s recording is just what it always does and always has done.
The 1040 automatically does 1s recording…it never had this option.
You are wrong. 1040 had an option to use 1s or smart recording but it was changed with a 15.23 release, and after that moved to 1s only, but originally there was the option to change the recording intervall. Garmin states in the manuals that all other edges has such an option but not 1040 for whatever reason. Knowing their mess…they either were merging changes for all older edge devices and implemented that to 1040 forgetting to add the switch or they partly updated the osftware for 1040 with the bits from older (pre 15.23) software.
Oh and btw. that change of removing the switch and removing the smart recording was considered a bug bc it was not mentioned anywhere in the release info…bc garmin is amazing and not bother about such things like changelogs and it was the only edge device pushed to 1s only recording (all other are supporting smart recording per their own manuals). So I can argue that they just had fixed the long (3 years old) forgotten bug, but were not smart enough to implement a button, GArmin do such stupidity all the time. Again what is your solution to OPs problem?
I’m on v28.20 too with my 840 since a couple of days and have no problems.
Just checked the most recent activity and it has second by second data.
Actions - Edit data shows that right away.
Didn’t know the full history on the x40 series since I’ve got mine 2 years ago.
Regardless, if an edge is paired to a powermeter, 1s recording is the default.
The problem is not clearly defined, how can a solution be proposed? I said take a screenshot of the second by second values and I will get it to a contact at Garmin.
I feel like you’re taking this personally and while amusing to me, it might not be to everyone.
I can fully understand that and I’m almost 100% that this bug is not a widespread one and as such will not be fixed for next 5 years (there is no mention of it on beta forums which makes it even less possible to be fixed) so again I gave my solution here (sry for quoting myself):
and downgrading can be tricky bc like a year ago Garmin stopped releasing the files for downgrading (even for beta so it made people stop installing it bc they were risking too much and left alone if anything) so instead I would just try to fully reset the device
and sorry no bad blood here, I just watched how Garmin behaves and if it works it is great but if you are a victim of a bug, it often takes months to get it fixed so I would strongly suggest to replace the device via the official support if possible
ps. ofc I don’t know the fit file so there is a chance the problem somewhere else and not with the recording.
Exactly, and sometimes even if you downgrade you might end up doing a full reset anyway, which can be a pain.
That’s why I want to see the numbers from the fit file, for all we know it’s doing 1s recording perfectly and it’s some issue on the intervals.icu side
Sorry guys, while you were fighting here I was out riding
My latest ride, which was synced from garmin connect, does not have the “smart recording” warning.
I re-synced my first ride, which caused this post, from garmin connect and the warning is gone there too.
fitfiletools also confirmed that the original source .fit file had all the data every second and there was not smart recording there.
So any hopes of a secret garmin bug coming back after 5 years have been crushed.
Who knows what caused this originally, but its clear it wasn’t the edge device.
Thanks for the helpful ideas while this issue was occurring!
Hi Guys, i am having the same issue with two of my latest rides recorded with a Wahoo Element Bolt v2. The same message is displayed, and also, my intervals from the lap are totally inexistant in Intervals.icu. I haven’t done any update on my device, and the issue appeared on two rides longer than 150km. Shorter rides achieved between these two didn’t show such issue. Hope you can help me !
Your ride has come to Intervals.icu via Strava. If you download the “Streams CSV” on the activity data page you can see that it doesn’t have every second recording.
