The new signup page prompts for email, name etc. and asks for a password. You can use that to login instead of “Connect with Strava”. You can choose to link a Garmin Connect or Strava account in signup for automatic activity download or neither and manually upload .fit files.

I think I figured it out already.
On your settings page, you can set a password for your account.
