Heart Rate Zones (defaults quite different) vs fitness chart

Default Heart Rate Zones on intervals seemed quite out compared to what I’m used to on any Garmin and my perceived zones. Today I did what I’d call a solid hours Zone 2 ride, power and heart rate. A little burst of SS towards the end.

The default HR zones in intervals had me pretty much in zone 1 for the whole ride. That doesn’t feel right to me at all.

Anyway I worked out how to change the zones, have played around a bit and made it similar to the Garmin numbers I’m using, especially for zones 1&2. Ive changed it to 5 zone Coggan and tweaked the lower zone ranges slightly.

Re-processed activities and I’d say things look more how I expect them.

That all seemed pretty straightforward, and I may ultimately tweak both intervals and my Garmin further to make them the same.

Anyway the real question is this - does changing the system and zones have any knock on effects within intervals as a whole or is it just for visualising? Just want to make sure I haven’t done something that’s going to have a big impact (perhaps negatively) elsewhere. Looking at the fitness chart doesn’t seem to have changed so am guessing maybe not but don’t really understand.

One other question is how RHR applies. RHR data should be coming in from Garmin and is slightly higher now recovering from a cold, but does this have any effect on the zones? I didn’t see where to set it or where it is in the activity.

And apologies, I know this is one of those topics that must come up all the time and I’ve looked through a bit of this forum to find answers. But I’m just curious how these things work.

I can only tell you something about the first part of your story. You should keep the zones on Garmin and intervals the same, they are your training zones. So if you plan a workout or take it from the library, your device will give you the appropriate effort, e.g. 10min Zone 2. As your fitness improves, your zones also change and you bring e.g. more power at a lower heart rate. Intervals shows you your improvement so you can adjust your zones (if you want). I hope I made myself somewhat understandable.

Perfectly clear thanks.

As yet I’ve not done too much on the workout side yet, I might just keep that in Garmin. And I think I usually plan as a percentage power rather than hr zone but definitely bear it in mind as I can see it’s quite a useful way of planning.
