Additional fit file field - WindFactor

Apologies for the tongue-twister title.

I’ve just installed the ConnectIQ app Windfield to my Garmin Edge 840. It allows the inclusion of a data field in the fit files. In Garmin Connect, it’s visible as “WindFactor”. I was thinking this could be useful in analysing performance in time trials.

Would it be possible include that in the Activity’s charts? I can email over a fit file.

Best wishes,

Robert

Poking around in the fit file, I see this as developer_wind_factor.
Is adding this as a chart in an activity something a user can set up themself? Happy yo have a play with javascript if so.

Unfortunately I still haven’t got custom activity traces done which is what is needed for this. Hopefully soon!

Out of interest what are the units of wind_factor?

I think it is mph - perhaps kph if that is what’s being used.

So does it know what direction you are riding in, the wind at that time and figure out the effective headwind/tailwind?

Yes, it knows the rider’s direction from the GPS data, but the wind speed is not via the Garmin directly, but via nearby weather stations. So it’s not taking into account shelter from trees etc. The website is Windfield. It seems to be able to log a single set of data in the fit file which is the relative wind strength dependent on the wind direction relative to the ride direction at each data point.

I finally implemented custom activity streams and “Wind Factor” is the first.

Thanks David, I’ll get started on looking at this. Annoyingly, it didn’t record properly during last night’s evening ‘10’!
