Add activity subtypes

Hi David,
It would be nice to be able to split each activity type (run, bike, etc) in subtypes.

Why?

  • I use power as the main source for Time in zone, Training load, etc when I am road running, but power is not a good measure of effort for Trail Running for instance, so I rather use heart rate. I guess it is the same for Mountain Biking compared to Road Biking.
    It is possible to change this for each activity individually so it is not blocking, but it would be a true improvement to be able to pre define this.
  • Also, I don’t want to see the same metrics and graphs in the activity types for running (i want power for instance) and trailing (VAM is nice!).
  • On the home page, it would be nice to differentiate easily with colors what is an activity. Currently i am “hacking” the RPE to be able to display the colors that I want.
  • It would also be useful for sub totals.

Here is a quick list of subdivisions I was thinking about :
Run → Road running, Trail running, Orienteering
Bike → Road biking, Mountain biking, Gravel, BMX…
Swim → Pool, Outdoor Swimming
I guess it can be done for other sports too.

To go even further:
Be able to choose a category for training between long ride/run, recovery ride/run, intervals ride/run (which could be even splitted in PMA/VMA, Threshold, Tempo…) to visualize our training.

My apologies if this request was already made since it is quite basic, but I couldn’t find any related feature request. I guess it is a challenging request, but if you find the appropriate way to do this I think it would really improve the user experience.

Good suggestions but as you suggest it is tricky to implement. Intervals.icu keeps most settings “per sport” (e.g. what to use for “time in zones”). To do this I would likely need to add a lot more activity types (sub-types would be much harder to implement). But this would cause other problems because now you would get different totals for “Run”, “Trail Run” etc etc.
