Strava Privacy Update Nov'24

There’s a nuance here…
The data that you get through the Strava API is NOT the original data but a Strava ‘Enhanced’ version of it.
The ‘Enhanced’ is to take with a lot of grains of salt though because they may be adding some segment info to it, but they also strip a lot of original data like for example the L/R power data.
Anyway, that means that the modified data you get through the API, is in some way at least partially ‘their’ data and that’s what they abuse off.
If you go to the Strava site and download your original Activity Data file (TCX or FIT or…), then you have ‘your’ data and you can do with it what you want. Unfortunately, that means that you loose the automation process.
I’m absolutely not a fan of Strava and the above is in no means a ‘defence’ but legally, there’s nothing you can do about that. I 'm more like a ‘Strava hater’ and have only been on their site for a couple of days before I rapidly cancelled my account again. In the early Intervals days, I waited patiently to become a member of Intervals until the Garmin connection was available…

Technically yes any app that does anything at all is at odds with the API terms of service. It has always been like that. I have tried to stay on the right side of Strava “in spirit” so I will have to implement hiding of Strava data and hope that is what they are actually looking for.

But I am pursuing as many direct integration options as I can line up.

Yup, welcome to the modern internet full of walled gardens.

I’ve been wishing for a Mastodon-like Strava for a while now to solve this problem…

Just trying to think through the implications of unchecking the ‘download activities’ from Strava checkbox on my Intervals account.

I am a Garmin user, so all activities recorded on one of my Garmin devices will still appear, but I will lose the title sync with Strava that Intervals does for me now.

I’m not 100% sure where my Zwift activities are coming from? Looks like Strava? If so, I believe I can’t get that from Garmin (they go there too) as they won’t pass it along. That means I’d need to figure out how to get Zwift stuff into Intervals and I’ll lose all past Zwift activities. It all goes to TrainingPeaks too (free account), but they’re unlikely to want to sync with Intervals. Any thoughts?

I used to use Wahoo devices a year or two back. Garmin won’t have those. Those will be lost if I disconnect Strava.

Does that sum it up?

First of all keep Strava connected. Intervals.icu will replace matching Strava activities when they come in from other sources. Intervals.icu is busy integrating with Zwift (it is done, they are testing) but I can’t say when that will be released.

You won’t lose your past Strava activities with this change, they just won’t be visible to your followers and coaches. Also that isn’t going to happen for a couple of weeks.

You can connect Wahoo as well. Intervals.icu will pull in those activities like it does for Garmin.

Thanks David!

So, this sounds important, I just want to make sure I understand it. If you see the same activity come in via Garmin Connect and Strava, you will replace the Strava activity with the Garmin activity thus avoiding the Strava issues? That sounds like a great strategy for dealing with Strava!

At least until Garmin decides to ‘enshittify’ their platform.
The ‘Enshittification’ of TikTok

yes, thats how it works.

Hey! I left, or rather, they finally manufactured a reason to kick me out :man_shrugging: Their loss.

Got an email from TR today. You know how they talk down “capacitive” training on the bike? It seems they approve of capacitive training for strength.

This year I’ve turned back the hands of time (from strength POV) and am stronger now than 30 years ago. By NOT doing capacitive training the way TR sees it. Since Coach Chad was shown the door, a non coach keeps making claims that are not true in my experience.

So better I stay away versus posting hard evidence you can train strength and endurance in ways that deliver strong results, and without significant interference. Just because someone hasn’t done an intervention or longitudinal study doesn’t invalidate the lessons of real-world coaching.

Been wanting to just get away from Strava for a while now and this is the perfect impetus. I just downbloaded all of my Strava data - what is the easiest way to upload all of the fit / gpx files to intervals.icu in one fell swoop? (I have ~3,500 activities / files to upload) Thanks!

You can select many files at once using the “Upload” button on the calendar page. I would suggest doing a year at a time. You won’t be able to upload the whole zip file though because it will be too big.

I am probably going to write an importer for that file (like the Garmin one). If you wait a bit you can use that. It will preserve more data.

Is there anything we need to be aware of before quitting Strava? I’m thinking of settings sourced from strava eg equipment and usage statistics. Will these continue to work and update after closing the account?

There’s no reason to disconnect Strava from Intervals, but rather to change the source from the original device/app recording the information/data.

My question is: if i close my strava account completely, will information such as equipment (and associated hourly usage) no longer be available to intervals?

Was wondering why you were so silent over on the TR forum. Sorry to hear that!
