Yesterday I did an open water swim, Garmin records it as taking 55 min 5 sec but after upload to intervals.icu it shows as 22 min 53 sec, please see screenshot. Distance is the same for both, the issue appears to be the activity duration.

Isn’t that simply the ‘moving time’ calculation being off because of low speed?

It’s intersting tho that the moving time is 22:53 and the timeline intervls view shows the entire 55m duration and then theres the 29:34 duration

Summary shows moving time (or total time in case of Ignore velocity)
Timeline shows elapsed time - you can hide pauses but timeline time displays as total elapsed.
On the top left of the chart area, the cursor position is shown as elapsed and time of day.

It’s been like that for a while now, so looks totally correct

I enabled ignore velocity and updated the activities, went back to the swim and reprocessed the original file, no change. My Garmin watch recorded it correctly and it was correctly uploaded to Garmin Connect, something must have happened in the sync to intervals.icu. I also tried exporting the .fit from Garmin and manually uploading to intervals.icu, same result. I’ll also note that I have other open water swims, exact same location, course, pretty much the same pace, duration etc. and they all show correctly in intervals.icu. Also my swims in the pool are pretty much the same pace/velocity and they are corrected sync’d, so I don’t think it’s related to velocity.

The timeline time corresponds to Garmin looking at your screenshots.
Ignore velocity works for Indoor rides where you forgot to turn off GPS (just tested this to make sure and moving time immediately adapts to elapsed time without reanalyzing or reprocessing). So I guess that something isn’t acting the same way for Swims.

What immediately catches attention is the difference in how the pace-stream looks.

I uploaded the exported (from Garmin) .fit file into a fit file viewer. The individual records (117) show the start and end time of the activity which matches the ~55 minutes duration. I would interpret this as the fit file as all the correct data, but there’s an issue occurring when it’s ingested by intervals.icu.

But why does your pace stream looks so flat (and probably wrong)? I think this is the error because it‘s calculating the wrong moving time. Though I have no idea, why the pace stream could be so wrong, if you didn‘t „fixed“ it or something like this.

I’m sorry, but I’m not understanding what you’re seeing in the pace stream as being wrong. The pace shows me swimming at a consistent pace of + or - 2 minutes/100m which is what I’d expect for myself for an open water swim in 15 degree C water 🙂 I compared the pace stream between Garmin and Intervals.icu, see screenshot and they are pretty much aligned. In the screenshot it shows the total time of 55m56s which equates to a pace of 2m3s. What I am questioning is why at the top left corner in the prior intervals.icu screenshot I shared it shows the time as 22m58s and a pace/100m of 50s, surely these values should be the same as what is shown in the table?

i am questioning the stream itself, because this is not what this is showing. It’s not 2:00/100m

I don’t say you are doing anything wrong, just asking why this stream is off, and this might be the reason for the discrepancy

Thanks for the clarification. I’m now wondering if it’s maybe my Garmin watch is set to smart recording and therefore the data stream doesn’t have adequate data points? But then again, my watch has always been set to smart recording and all my open water swims last year show a “normal” pace stream and my indoor swims do as well. The pace stream in Garmin Connect also shows a “normal” trace.

The plot thickens! Did the same swim today, as a test I disabled smart recording on my Garmin watch. The activity file today shows the distance at less than half the actual distance and the activity duration times are completely off again 19min08 at the top and 55min5 at the bottom. I also got the “disable smart recording” message despite the facts it was disabled. On the plus side, the Pace stream looks much better 🙂

Another piece to this puzzle; did another open water swim this morning and got a season best email, attached. Note the season best time shows 29m21s for 1.5k, but the total moving time shows 15m17s for 2km. Garmin Connect shows all the data correctly, so it seems to me that there is an issue with how intervals.icu is ingesting and/or interpreting the data. @david I’d welcome your insights into this. Thank you.

Hello everyone, sorry to bring this topic up again, but I’m having the same problem with my Forerunner 970.

I’m seeing exactly what’s described here. The swim session syncs correctly via intervals.icu → Garmin, and the target pace is correct (set to 02:45 min/100 m as expected). But on the watch, the distance/pace display shows a value in min/km instead of min/100 m.

I ran a comparison test with the exact same structured session (50 meter repeats, same target pace) via Nolio, and in that case, the watch displays it correctly at 02:45 min/100 m, no conversion issues. Given that the same watch handles this data correctly when the workout comes from Nolio but not when it comes from intervals.icu, this seems to indicate a processing issue with the intervals.icu export rather than with the Garmin API.

What do you think?

So it‘s the same problem, but a complete different error?
Seems strange 😉

Do you have the pace setting set to /100m on the settings page for swims?

I checked Settings → Sport Settings → Swim and I don’t see an explicit pace unit toggle there (only the threshold pace field, no /100m vs /100yd selector). Could you point me to the exact settings page you mean?
