Intelligent Coaching Utility (ICU Coach)

A quick update. Since your message I’ve gone a lot deeper than I expected — what started as one setting turned into a full review of how the coach reads your data, and I’ve found and fixed a number of real issues along the way.

It’s taking a little longer than I’d hoped. I’d rather get this right than push out a half fix. I’ll write again once it’s live for you.

Thanks for your patience, and for the report — it was a good one.

Hi Alexander,

Your message turned into a much bigger piece of work than you probably expected.

Since then I’ve gone back through the whole structure and reworked it — how recovery and readiness are calculated, how the data is read from intervals.icu, and how the reasoning is presented to you. It ended up being a long list of changes and improvements rather than a single fix.

That work is now out: version 4.2.8 is live on both the App Store and Google Play. If you update and give it a few days, I’d genuinely like to hear how it reads to you now — whether it lines up better with what you’re seeing in Intervals, or still doesn’t.

And thank you for taking the time to report it in the first place. This is the kind of feedback that actually moves the app forward.

Hi Murat, thank you very much for the work . I just updated the app. I will report what’s changed.

Best

Alex

Buon allenamento!

Hi,

after two short workouts, I think that the app is still very cautious. While Garmin gave me 20 hours of rest, the app says 47 which is quite a difference. I didn’t train a lot in the last couple of weeks and with quite some effort I managed to almost get into the green zone where the form starts to rise. At this point, the app puts me in the leash.
I would be interested to hear what other users report.
Thanks for all the effort!
Best
Alex

Hi Alex,

First, one thing that may explain most of the gap. The app doesn’t produce a single “rest” number the way Garmin does. It produces two separate clocks, and they’re meant to be read differently:

Z2 / easy aerobic — when you can train again at all
Intensity (Z4+) — when hard work is back on the table
Mine from today looks like this:
":stopwatch: Recovery Pro

:bullseye: State: Ready
:one_o_clock: 24 hours
:person_biking: Z2: 12hours | :high_voltage: Intensity: 24hours

:construction: Constraints:
 Run — Z2, 90% of threshold, 154 bpm
 Ride — Z2, 90% of threshold, 154 bpm
 Swim — Z2, 90% of threshold, 154 bpm
:prohibited: No Z4+ efforts
:white_check_mark: Z1-Z2 only, recovery focus

:bar_chart: Recovery Factors:
• Weighted Load (72h): 118 (+49h)
• TSB (Form): -5 (0h)
• Intensity: 94 (×1.4)
• HRV: 35 (+3h)
• Resting HR: 47 (0h)
• Sleep: 7.2 (+1h)

:light_bulb: Recovery Tips:

  1. Hormonal recovery is the main limiter, so keep today in the light activity recovery range.
  2. Z2 is allowed in 12 hours; until then, stay with easy movement only.
  3. No Z4+ efforts today; intensity is available again in 24 hours.
  4. Prioritize sleep and nutrition tonight to support full recovery by tomorrow evening.

:memo: Hormonal recovery is the limiting system, so the safest approach is light activity recovery today. Z2 is allowed in 12 hours, and higher intensity is allowed in 24 hours. The completed swim fits a light activity recovery day, so no extra structured work is needed. Keep the day Z1-Z2 only and avoid Z4+ efforts until the next intense workout window.

:robot: Cloud AI"

So the headline figure is the intensity clock — it is not saying “do nothing for 47 hours.” Easy aerobic work usually opens well before that. Worth checking on your screen: what does your Z2 line say next to the 47?

Second, the app should be telling you why, and that’s what we’d like to see. Under Recovery Factors every input shows what it contributes in hours.

Could you send that block from your own screen? The thing we need is which field is carrying the hours for you. If it’s Weighted Load while your form is near zero, that’s a different problem from HRV or sleep driving it — and the fixes are different. Right now we’d be guessing, and your case is the interesting one precisely because you just climbed back toward positive form after a light stretch.

Reasons why my system is currently under stress is a drop in HRV from 34 to 31 and a resting HR up from 55 to 56.
This cold simply be measuring errors as those values are in the margins of error.

The system appears to be very sensitive to small changes.

Hi Alex,

Thanks for the detail — that’s useful. We’re working on an improvement to how the recovery guidance handles small day-to-day changes; it will ship in the next release.

I’ll let you know once it’s out.

Thank you so much for all the effort.
I can imagine how difficult it is to tell the system how to interpret data. I work in the field of medical devices where more and more manufacturers incorporate AI in their devices and what issues they are encountering. It’s a loooong development process.

To be honest, the app’s structure is huge, with so many things connected to each other and so many parameters feeding the app. The worst thing is that everyone’s numbers are different, so testing is very limited. Supporters like you are giving me very good direction to help me move forward. Thank you so much.

Hi Alexander,

I’ve just released an update (4.2.9, now live on both stores) with a number of improvements to how recovery is assessed. In short: small day-to-day changes that sit within your own normal range shouldn’t be read as a stress signal any more.

Would be great to hear how it looks on your side after a few days.

Hi all,

Since the first version of the app, many bugs have been fixed and a lot of improvements have been made. The feedback you shared with me has helped make ICU Coach better with every version.

By now, many of you have tried the app. Some liked it, some felt it still needed more, but I believe it keeps improving with every update.

So I’d like to ask all ICU Coach users to update when the new version becomes available.

The latest version, 4.3.1, has now been published on both stores.

With this version, Italian is working much better, Portuguese has been added, and many user requests and suggestions have been implemented.

Thanks again for all your feedback and support.

:bar_chart: Riepilogo:
• Distanza: 2.35km (2,35 km completati)
• Durata: 47:30
• TSS: 37 (Carico moderato)
• Intensità: 0.66 (Seduta aerobica)
• FC media: 135bpm (Frequenza cardiaca controllata)
• FC max: 167bpm (90% della frequenza cardiaca massima)

:bullseye: Metriche nuoto:
• SWOLF: 88
• Frequenza di bracciata: 27.18/min
• Passo/100m: 2:01/100m
• Lunghezza vasca: 50m

:microscope: Distribuzione delle zone:
• Z1: 25:12 (53%)
• Z2: 11:45 (25%)
• Z3: 10:02 (21%)

:chart_increasing: Analisi del carico: Fitness 53.2 | Fatica 59.0 | Forma -5.8 | Rapporto di carico 1.11 | Rampa di carico 2.5

:light_bulb: Insight:

:bar_chart: Resumo:
• Distância: 2.35km (2,35 km concluídos)
• Duração: 47:30
• TSS: 37 (Carga leve a moderada)
• Intensidade: 0.66 (Esforço aeróbico controlado)
• FC média: 135bpm (Frequência cardíaca estável)
• FC máx.: 167bpm (90% da sua FC máxima)

:bullseye: Métricas de natação:
• SWOLF: 88
• Frequência de braçadas: 27.18spm
• Ritmo/100m: 2:01/100m
• Tamanho da piscina: 50m

:microscope: Distribuição por zonas:
• Z1: 25:12 (53%)
• Z2: 11:45 (25%)
• Z3: 10:02 (21%)

:chart_increasing: Análise de carga: Fitness 53.2 | Fadiga 59.0 | Forma -5.8 | Razão de carga 1.11 | Progressão de carga 2.5

:light_bulb: Insights:
